Responsibilities include developing road map and objectives for the department, ensure on-time delivery and the technical quality of work performed, determine staffing and financial goals and responsible for the results. Ensure SOW’s are quoted using the Proposal and Estimating Process; Ensure SOW’s are staffed appropriately and team is following all work instructions and in compliance with the Project Execution Process. Directly manage and supervise the department supervisors and principal specialists. Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to supervisors on issues with employees, customers, projects, etc. Ensure all engineering services performed follow established processes and engineering standard work. Advice students in their academic progression. Support the department and college in initiatives to improve the education of the students. Develop research opportunities by writing proposals and directing the research with graduate and undergraduate student support. Provide service outside of the university by reviewing papers for journals, proposals and serving on technical committees.

Advisor to 14 Masters and two PhD students. Also served on the committee for many other students. Developed the "Principles of Measurements and Instrumentation" course and developed the lab. Developed and taught "Optical Techniques in Fluid Mechanics" and upper level graduate course. Taught the student launch initiative, a special topics course where the students develop and build a rocket and payload that will fly to a specified altitude while the payload does what it is designed to do, measure something or perform a task. Helped turn the class into a national competition. The UAH team obtained first place overall two years and also won the best engineering designed twice. As part of this project developed and taught workshops to help both college and high school teams start their projects.

Designed and directed the construction of a test facility on campus for testing rocket and air breathing engines. Facility was capable of using gaseous and liquid fuels (fuels tested include: hydrogen, gaseous methane, liquid propane, kerosene, gelled kerosene, and gelled propane) and gaseous and liquid oxidizers (gaseous and liquid oxygen, and nitrous oxide). Solid and hybrid motors were also tested. Developed the instrumentation system, control system and the standard operating procedures to ensure safe and reliable operations.

Developed the ultrasonic burning rate technique to measure the burning rate of solid propellant. System was capable of measuring burning rate at pressures from ~100- 5000psi in a single test. Also able to measure at temperatures from room temperature to 145 degrees F.

Other areas of research include, injector spray characterization, fiber optic sensor testing, thrust vectoring, combustion instability, flow visualization, etc.

Research funding from companies and agencies such as ATK, Barber Nichols, NASA MSFC, Orbital Research Inc, General Dynamics, Luna Innovations, CFDRC, AVEKA, Boeing, DARPA etc.

Graduate Research Assistant, 1989-1993; Research Assistant, April 1993-July 1995; Propulsion Engineering Research Center,  Dept. of Mechanical Engineering

Built the Cryogenic Combustion Lab. for Penn State's Propulsion Engineering Research Center. The lab a facility to safely test sub scale rocket combustors. Responsibilities included, specifying and purchasing materials and equipment, installing, oxygen cleaning, programming the controller, developing procedures and checking out the facility. Also developed a windowed single element rocket combustor, that could accommodate a variety of injector and propellant combinations and various optical diagnostics.

Research for dissertation was to obtain benchmark quality data for verification and validation of CFD codes. OH radical concentration was measured in a gaseous oxygen/hydrogen coaxial injected flame with laser induced florescence. Also mixing characteristics were visualized from light scattered from seed particles in the various flows.

Also supported other student's research efforts using this lab and combustor. Some of the areas were, velocity measurements using LDV, soot concentration using laser induced incandescence, LOX spray characterization with Phase Doppler Particle Analysis (PDPA) and shadowgraphs.

Air Force Astronautics Laboratory                                                                      Edwards AFB, CA.

Captain USAF, 1988, Rocket Combustion Project Manager, Aerothermochemistry Branch, Analysis Division, April 1984-April 1989.

Project Manager of the combustion group of the analysis division of the Air Force Astronautics lab. (was the Air Force Rocket Propulsion Lab). Duties included, developing request for proposals, evaluating proposals, and managing the projects (both technical and financial). Review projects with contractors and with the Air Force management. In house performance analysis of solid rocket motors using Solid Performance Program (SPP); Also conduct in house research for aluminum combustion and head end erosion.

Projects managed include, Particle imaging from burning metalized propellants, NPS; Temperature Sensitivity studies, Hercules; Head end erosion, Hercules; Head end erosion sub scale testing, developed in house.

Also worked on failure analysis of Titan rocket failure at Vandenberg AFB, and failure analysis of Noveltex rocket nozzle test. Directed the testing of heating rates to the metal case with metalized propellants for the former and performed non standard analysis of motor failure using SPP for the latter.
