Goal: To use my extensive skills with electronics, optics, mechanics, software development and data analysis to solve complex problems.

Selected Accomplishments:

Designed and built a sensitive electronic and optical computer controlled instrument to measure laser light scattered into three dimensions from an isolated particle with a multi detector, 3 dimensional sensing array. 

Designed and built an instrument to measure polarized light scatteringfrom a stream of ice particles or aerosols.  This small, self contained instrument includes an onboard embedded PC that acquired the silicon photodiode signals and transferred the data to an external PC via RS-232 connection.  This instrument includes a computer controlled electromechanical ½ wave plate to control the polarization plane of the incident laser light. (presently a DPSS laser, 532 nm)

Designed, researched and built an experimental apparatus to measure the spectral reflection properties in the infrared of laboratory generated ice crystal using a grating monochromator, lock-in amplifier, germanium photodiode detectors, and LN2 cooled InSb detector. 

Technical Experience

Optics Experience with fiber optics, lasers (VISand IR wavelengths), Detectors (VIS, IR), integrating spheres, grating monochromators, standard optical bench positioners, filters, mounts etc.

SoftwareC, C++, Fortran, Borland C++ (BCB RAD GUI), and data analysis and presentation with MsOffice (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).  I have familiarity with several C++ and C based data analysis libraries and have combined Fortran and C based algorithms.  Developed GUI to collect and analyze digital data collected over RS-232 and parallel interfaces.

Electronics: 20+ years experience troubleshooting, design and maintenance of both digital and analog equipment. 

 

Work Experience:

Research Associate:

Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles.

Experimental lead in a research program to examine the optical properties of ice clouds for comparison to theoretically derived results based on cloud microphysics.  Established a laboratory to generate the desired ice clouds in a chamber, measure the infrared reflection and transmission properties and determine the ice cloud particle habits and concentrations.  Developed a small multi-channel polar nephelometer to measure the ice particle scattering phase functions both in the laboratory and eventually in situ.  Developed a transmissometer using long path multipass cell to measure the extinction properties of ice clouds in situ.  Several peer-reviewed reports have been published based on this work.

Research associate in the experimental examination of aerosol optical properties.  Developed a dual polarization polar nephelometer to measure the light scattering properties of aerosols and a computational inversion routine based on genetic algorithms to determine the basic optical properties of aerosols from these measurements.   The focus of this work is on secondary organic aerosols and coated black carbon.  Wrote several successful proposals (DOE) and several peer reviewed reports.
