PROFILE

I am an experienced flight dynamics engineer with a strong background in the areas of the Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS), orbit optimisation and mission analysis. During my 12 years at Airbus Defence and Space I have been involved in many projects, covering all phases of the spacecraft life cycle (from pre-phase A to phase E). I have started my career as a specialist mission analyst to then move, in order to broaden my knowledge of spacecraft systems, to the AOCS area and, more recently, covering the whole functional avionics domain.

I have quickly progressed in my AOCS career from analyst to Study Leader and eventually Architect, covering roles of increased responsibility (both technical and managerial) and increased interaction with the whole spacecraft system and with the Customer, delivering the AOCS for GAIA and Lisa Pathfinder to ESA.

In my current role (Functional Avionics Lead for PLATO) I manage the whole functional avionics domain (Spacecraft Operations, FDIR, AOCS, Central Software, Spacecraft Database, Functional Verification and Functional Verification Infrastructure)

I am looking for a role that would allow me to further expand my competencies in the flight dynamics, spacecraft operations and spacecraft system areas. I am also interested in opportunities to broaden my experience in subcontractor management and, generally speaking, open for interesting opportunities even outside the aerospace industry.

 

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Managed the AOCS area (cost, schedule, technical) on Lisa PathFinder and delivered the AOCS to ESA. Led the AOCS team during the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (particularly complex given the number of orbit raising manoeuvres, separation of science module from propulsion module, ...)

Currently coordinating the whole functional avionics (Operations, FDIR, Spacecraft Database, AOCS, Central Software, Functional Verification and Functional Verification Infrastructure for PLATO (currently in phase B1)

Led the AOCS analysis team to the successful delivery of the GAIA AOCS to ESA and supported GAIA Launch and Early Orbit Phase

Developed/contributed to the development of mission analysis optimisation tools that have been essential to the execution of various pre-phase A and phase A studies; the most generic of these tools are actually still used in the company by other people

 

EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE

Functional Avionics Lead for PLATO at Airbus Space and Defence 2015-Now

As Functional Avionics Lead for PLATO (currently in phase B1) I am in charge of the management (cost, schedule, technical) of the whole set of functional disciplines; this includes the AOCS, Operations, FDIR, Central Software, Functional Verification, Functional Verification Infrastructure and Spacecraft Database.

As part of the role, I interface heavily with the project management office and I need to ensure harmonisation of activities and smooth interactions between the various functional avionics disciplines, in order to achieve an overall optimisation of the functional avionics area.
 

AOCS Architect for Lisa PathFinder (LPF) at Airbus Space and Defence 2012-2016

As AOCS Architect for Lisa PathFinder (phase C/D) I have been in charge of the whole AOCS area: this includes planning, costing and technical management of all the activities performed by the AOCS team.

As part of the role I have also been the interface between the AOCS team and the other subsystems, and between the AOCS team and the final customer (ESA), up to the Launch and Early orbit phase. I am currently providing in orbit support as required

A sample of the technical activities I have performed include

Definition, management and review of the classic AOCS core activities (design, tuning, stability analyses, simulation plans, performance campaigns) including FDIR (Failure Detection Isolation and Recovery)

Flight Software requirements for the implementation of the AOCS algorithms

Preparation of AOCS units requirements to unit supplier

Models requirements for simulation of AOCS units (

Preparation of Test plans and test specifications for the FV (Functional Verification) and AIT (Assembly Integration and Testing) teams, in order to verify the AOCS SW and HW suitability to the mission requirements. Design Assessment on FV/AIT reports

Definition of Flight Operations Procedures and preparation of the Spacecraft User Manual (AOCS Volume)

Synthesis of AOCS performance for inputs to system budgets

 

AOCS Study Leader for Gaia (phase C/D) at Astrium Ltd 2011-2013

As AOCS Study Leader for the GAIA mission (phase C/D), I have led a team of up to 8 analysts to the successful delivery of the GAIA AOCS (including FDIR) to ESA in 2012.

My responsibilities included overviewing and reviewing all AOCS analyses, planning and allocating tasks to analysts (or myself) in order to meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality of the work. In this phase of the mission, analyses focused on the final tuning and performance campaigns for all the AOCS modes. Due to the stringent payload and spacecraft safety requirements for GAIA, a significant effort was made in the FDIR area

I interfaced with the Flight Software team and with the Simulations and Models Team to ensure anomalies resolution and successful delivery of the FVB (Functional Verification Bench, a high fidelity AOCS simulator using actual Flight Software) to the AOCS team.

I have been part of the Project Support Team for the launch and LEOP

 

AOCS Study Leader for Plato (phase A/B1) at Astrium Ltd 2010-2011

I have led the AOCS study for the full phase A/B1 of Plato, interfacing with the Prime Team (Astrium Toulouse) and ESA. The study was completed on cost and on schedule

My main tasks involved preliminary AOCS modes design, AOCS architecture trade offs (sensors and actuators), preliminary assessment of the AOCS performance and requirements compliance assessment.

 

GAIA AOCS Engineer at Astrium Ltd 2009-2010

In order to broaden my expertise from my previous role, I requested to be seconded to another subsystem. The opportunity arose to join the AOCS team for GAIA during the phase C, as responsible for the Orbit Control Mode (OCM). At the end of the 6 months secondment I was given the choice between my old position and new position, and I decided to move permanently to the AOCS team.

My tasks involved the ownership of the OCM (design, functional validation, tuning, performance campaign), the tuning of the Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) for CPS thrusters and the tuning of the Micro-Propulsion Thrust Modulator (MTM)

I have been responsible for parts of the Normal Mode (Performance Campaign)

 

Mission Analysis Specialist at Astrium Ltd 2004-2008

I have developed my own genetic algorithm and built optimisation tools (using C++ language) for a range of problems, spanning from the interplanetary transfers optimisation (now part of Astrium's NEONAV tool) to the spacecraft formation flying orbit optimisation (applied to the LISA formation).

I have been Astrium's responsible and point of contact with ESA for the mission analysis and trajectory/orbit optimisation on a number of pre-phase A and phase A ESA studies, for missions like Marco Polo, LISA, Moon Twins, Darwin.

I have provided mission analysis support to the Bepi Colombo and Solar Orbiter programs.

 

TRAINING

I have had several trainings during my work experience, on system engineering (2 weeks), UML (1 week), basic project management, people appraising and other more technical ones.

 

EDUCATION

M.Sc (5 years course) in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (1999-2004).

I have graduated in 2004 with a final mark of 99/100. The 10 months final thesis, titled “Multi-objective optimisation of aero-assisted manoeuvres for interplanetary missions”, focuses on the development (in Matlab environment) of a genetic algorithm for interplanetary transfers optimisation. Number and sequence of planetary flybys are part of the optimisation vector. In case of aero-assisted manoeuvre, the optimisation algorithm selects the optimal control profile for the aerodynamic angles.

I have spent one year of my university studies at the Kungliga Tekniska Hogskolan (Stockholm) as part of the Erasmus program

 

LANGUAGES

My mother toungue is Italian. I speak a fluent English and a very good French. I can also speak basic Spanish and basic German.

 

INTERESTS

I enjoy every aspect of travelling around the world, including the planning of the journey.

I love outdoors activities (mountaineering and skiing in particular) and sports (tennis, football, volleyball and more).
