Prof. Dr. Oscar Saavedra ( Turin University).

01/2007–31/12/2009 Ph.D. student at the University of Turin, Italy,
Project title: Effects and consequences by the Radiation Damage on the Gaia CCD.
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mario, Lattanzi.

25/02/2010–25/06/2011 I had been working in the Astronomical Observatory of Turin in the “Characterization Astro-Photometry of the damage radiation at the CCD, located in the focal plane of the astrometric telescope of the Gaia Mission ” “Caratterizzazione astro-fotometrica del danno da radiazione sui CCD del piano focale del telescopio astrometrico della missione Gaia”

Ph.D. Thesis
Gaia is a ambitious space mission with face one of most difficult and fundamental challenges of the modern Astronomy, Created a precise three-dimensional map of about one billion stars throughout our galaxy and beyond. For other hand, the Earth’s Local space radiation environment, solar events , Interaction of galactic
rays, Etc., normally produce damages in the scientific CCD Device Under these context, the subject of my Ph.D. studies is focused in the determination and study of the damage radiation and the effects that the Gaia
CCD take place under a hostile environmental were high level of radiation are encountered (i.e., having experienced a radiation dose equivalent to the Gaia end-of- mission level, i.e. 4E 9 protons/cm2 ), the analysis had been developed using a real campaign data’s which arrive from diverse experimental tests developed by EAD’S Astrium Company (France).
The study: The radiation damage effects are clearly shown by the evolution, transit by transit, of image spot brightness across the irradiated area. The charge loss due to trap presence affects the simulated star signal mostly at the first transit; a further, less intense charge loss can occur at the second transit, when the signal intensity at the first transit was not powerful enough to saturate available traps.
Such a behaviour indicates that the traps involved are very effective in capturing electrons and less in releasing them. The average amount of charge loss is highly correlated to the signal intensity, in accordance to the theoretical predictions which relate the trap behaviour, (e.g., time capture constant), to the electron density in the pixel.
The current results of the Ph.D. work, are oriented on the Astrometric and Photometric fields
