Senior Solution Integration Engineer (Network Integration Engineer)


APC are global specialists in energy managementproviding enterprise-grade data centres environmental and security management systems. This includes capacity modelling with computational fluid dynamics; cooling modelling; energy usage and efficiency reporting, to name but a few.


As an APC Solution Integration and Software Configuration Engineer I provided full technical support and network engineering professional services to APC clients. This included solution design, integration, performance and software implementation.


Managing and coordinating closely with pre sales colleagues, software application engineers, architects and project management teams to bring projects to completion; often responsible for the complete turn-key cycle end to end.


Key Responsibilities:


·         Installation, setup and configuration services carried out over multiple communication protocols such as TCP, IP, SNMP, SMTP, FTP, DHCP, LDAP, PPP, Telnet, BMS & PLC’s.

·         Data Centre IT Commissioning.

·         Designing and planning management modules with metrics for demand forecasting through detailed capacity predictive modelling within the APC ISX Central Operations and capacity management applications.

·         Setting up network managed and monitored infrastructure hardware devices within operations including capacity monitoring and analysis.

·         Analyse trend breakdown reports; present recommendations to meet client requirements.

·         Trouble shooting and training for complex customer integrated data centre solutions.

·         Incorporating the use of various devices such as UPS, cooling, environmental monitoring, surveillance & PX-HID security products.

·         Tailor and present pre and post sales workshops for prospective clients.

The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) is the operations centre of the European Space Agency (ESA) and as such, supports the launch, early orbit and operational phases (LEOP) of ESA satellites. Such activities made the atmosphere highly pressured on occasions. We focused on the development and operation areas which covered two main data centres as well as numerous Support (OSS) Teams. I focused on two main, mission critical, DCR’s (Dedicated Control Rooms).


As part of the Operational Software areas, Windows System Support and System Administration of the ITIL certified Service Desk tool (Axios Assyst Enterprise) I diagnosed problems; provided technical support for hardware, software and systems, within the Windows environment. Key tasks included:


Building customising and deploying systems;

Preparation, planning & testing of patches, software upgrades and implementation;

Maintenance of technical documentation and operational procedures;

Communication and interfacing with other support teams was also crucial.


For the administration of the Service Desk tool key duties included:


Managing attributes of the infrastructure, administering the privileges and the access rights of users Customising database menus and forms to coincide with the organisational needs

Maintaining the underlying (Oracle) database (backup, creation of different versions).

Infrastructure Support – Systems Engineer      Sept 2000 – Sept 2006


As a Systems Engineer at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), my role was to support an international user community of 850, with all the cultural and international idiosyncrasies this entails on platforms such as Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT and XP utilising packages MS Office, Citrix, Exceed, View-Now, Lotus Notes, IBM Tivoli backup, amongst others. I was responsible for maintenance and administration of servers and cluster servers (Microsoft Windows 2003 Advanced Server). This involved creating and managing user accounts; group shares; daily maintenance; printer management; fault finding and upgrading hardware and software. Key knowledge requirements: Active Directory; SMS 2000/2003; Cisco Wireless LAN; Microsoft system update server & SAV corporate Server.

I commenced with ICL as a Configuration Engineer working with many major accounts such as KPMG, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Department of Defence, Barclays Bank, Sabre, Glaxo Pharmaceutical. In only three months I was promoted to the position of team leader where I managed a team of 12 professionals in providing technical services on sensitive high security accounts. I was then promoted to Quality Assurance Engineer responsible for security and correct configuration of equipment. I also acted as client interface liaison officer.

The theory for my apprenticeship was completed at Northeast Technical College undertook as block release sessions meaning I attended six weeks of college followed by six weeks on the job training for a period of two years. My duties would consist of helping the fully qualified technicians with all of their work.
