Skills and Summary of Qualifications

● Uncertainty quantification and Bayesian inference. Applied to design analysis and optimization under uncertainty.

● Expertise in applied mathematics, with particular attention to PDE solution, stochastic modeling, polynomial chaos approximations and Marcov Chain Monte Carlo simulations, with application to optimal design and risk minimization.

● Computational fluid mechanics with particular knowledge of reactive flows at subsonic and supersonic speeds, on-the-fly chemical mechanism reduction.

High performance computing experience and distributed-memory algorithms (MPI programming). Computer programming in C/C++, Fortran, Matlab, Python.

Knowledge of laser diagnostic techniques for reactive flows (LDV, Rayleigh and Raman scattering, laser-induced fluorescence).

● Active member of the Linux community.

● Ability to communicate sophisticated technical concepts in simple terms, maturated as a teaching assistant at Yale University.

Educational Background

Yale University:

Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering, (2012)

Thesis title:

Numerical simulation of reactive flows using instantaneous reduced chemistry and parallel distributed computational methods.

Politecnico di Milano:

M.S. in Space engineering, (2006)

Thesis title:

Numerical modeling of under-resolved detonations

GPA:

Magna cum laude

Von Karman Institute:

Summer school, (2003)

Scientific report:

A high resolution fluctuation-splitting scheme for the solution of nonlinear advection-reaction equations

Politecnico di Milano:

Bachelor in aerospace engineering, (2003)

Thesis title:

Design of a laser Doppler anemometer

GPA:

GPA: 100/100

Current employment

Postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, working on a research project of the MIT energy initiative funded by British Petroleum. The research focuses on novel algorithmic approaches to the optimization and design of the refining process. Particular attention is put on the quantification of the uncertainties and their effect on the optimization.

Awards

● Full scholarship from Yale School of Art and Sciences

● Teaching fellow of the Yale school of Engineering and Applied Sciences

● Awarded a full fellowship for a summer school at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, where I worked on a project on the numerical solution of advection-reaction equations.

● Honorable mention at the Italian Mathematics Olympic games for high-school students.

Summary of PhD thesis

● Analyzed state of the art methods for the solution of reactive flows and identified reasons of inefficiency.

● Autonomously developed a highly-scalable distributed-memory algorithm to use on terascale parallel computers.

● Developed a novel approach to the solution of chemically reacting flows that is capable of simplifying the mathematical model and automatically eliminates unimportant chemical species from the solution process.

● Experimental validation of numerical data using laser diagnostic techniques (Rayleigh and Raman scattering), leaser induced fluorescence and by gas sampling and spectroscopic analysis.

● Coordinated and supervised 1 undergraduate 1 graduate and 3 visiting students on multiple subprojects involving both the development of numerical methods and the design of experimental apparatuses.

Teaching experience

● Teaching assistant for fluid mechanics, multivariable calculus and differential equations.

● Head teaching assistant for multivariable calculus and differential equations.

● Teaching fellow for the Yale summer classes program for Physics laboratory I

● Acted as a coordinator for the research project on jet fuel in my research group

● Supervised undergraduate students working on an experimental project about atmospheric sampling.

Previous work experience

● Summer 2008: Computer programmer at EVC Rigid Film (Castiglione, Italy)

● Summer 2007: Computer programmer at BT elet. (Lonate Ceppino, Italy)

Languages

Italian (native), English (fluent), Chinese (introductory level)

Extracurricular activities

● Competitive sailing. Member of the Yale Corinthian yacht club (2007 - 2012)

● Jazz guitar player
