Name of firm: ELECTRONIC DEFENCE SYSTEMS Physical address: 185 Witch-Hazel Avenue Highveld Technopark Centurion Type of firm: Electronic Warfare
Previous post: System Engineer (1 January 2007 – 31 May 2012) Main job functions: My position was within the Integrated Systems Group. I report directly to the manager of the group. As a System Engineer, I was responsible for ensuring that the integrated electronic warfare system delivered to the client met the technical requirements specified. I was responsible for establishing baselines (hardware and software) on an integrated system level as well as interacting with product owners and development engineers to ensure that development activities met the required specifications. I was required to establish a test baseline used to verify the integrated system specifications. As a System Engineer, I assisted the project manager in addressing any technical issues raised by the customer. After delivery of the system, I formed part of a team offering support during platform integration and testing. From that point forward, I was responsible to reply to any technical issues raised by the customer concerning the integrated operation of the system. My work as a system engineer has exposed me to the DOORS software package, which was used for requirements analysis and traceability. Reason for leaving: Although I feel that there is a great deal more to learn in the system engineering environment, I feel that it is time to expand my horizons into different fields of engineering. Special courses undertaken: I was fortunate enough to attend an excellent course on system engineering presented by Mr. Robert Halligan from the Australian company Project Performance International. In addition to this, I attended a PROPS project management course presented by Mr. Nils Bagge. Salary: R 635 635 per annum Fringe benefits: Medical aid
Previous post: Development System Engineer (1 AUGUST 2004 – 31 DECEMBER 2006) Main job functions: My role as a Development System Engineer was to take responsibility for the design and development of radio frequency systems, typically in the frequency band of 0.5-18GHz, for use as subsystems within electronic warfare systems. The development phase included the simulation of the system (with software packages like Microwave Office and SysCalc) and the writing of specifications for the various subsystems and ensuring that their design (mechanical and electrical) met with the overall system specification. Furthermore, part of my core function was to liaise with the mechanical design department to complete the mechanical layout of the system. I was responsible for testing the first production units and ensuring that all the necessary documentation required by ISO 9001-2000 was in place. I was also responsible for recommending and implementing any changes that were required on systems under my authority. Reason for leaving: My work as a Development System Engineer aided me in identifying that I was more suited to system level work. The logical progression within the company was to become a System Engineer. The reason I chose to remain within the company was because I believed I was still capable of learning a great deal from the staff within the system engineering environment. I also believed that I was capable of contributing towards the company’s future goals.
Previous post: Microwave Development Engineer (1 MAY 2001 – 31 JULY 2004) Main job functions: My core function within the Microwave Department was the development of microwave components (0.5-18GHz) for use in electronic warfare systems. Primarily, this involved the electrical and mechanical design of microwave components. The design phase included meeting with clients to discuss their requirements. The design phase exposed me to software like AutoCAD, Microwave Office, MultiMatch and IE3D. I have working knowledge of all these software packages. Subsequent to the components been built, I was responsible for tuning the components to meet the required electrical specifications. The repetitive testing of the components was often achieved through the use of Matlab to control the measurement instrumentation. I therefore have some knowledge of Matlab. The tuning phase exposed me to specialised test equipment such as vector network analysers, scalar network analysers and synthesised sweepers. I also have operational knowledge of more conventional test equipment such as spectrum analysers and oscilloscopes. Furthermore, I was responsible for ensuring that the correct documentation was in place for all deliverable units. Reason for leaving: Working in the Microwave Department, there are limited opportunities of becoming familiar with the company’s core business, which is electronic warfare RF Subsystems. This in turn limits upward mobility within the company. I felt that in order to better establish myself within the company; I needed to become more involved in the company’s core business areas. This decision led me to move within the company to the RF Subsystems Group.
