Laboratory projects undertaken in university

 

Dance of the Planets

  1. Used data and simulations provided by a computer software to study orbital planetary and asteroid motion using Kepler's laws.

  2. Used colour-magnitude HR diagrams of 2 Glactic open c lusters to investigate their distances and perform main-sequence fitting to deduce the difference between their apparent and absolute magnitudes.

  3. Derived physical properties of the Sun through analysis of the solar continuum.


Forced Oscillations

  1. Studied the resonance characteristics of a vibrating mechanical system; damping of forced and free oscillations, it's quality factor under various conditions.

  2. Complemented the theoretical background to resonant systems through the experience gained in using modern digital sampling scopes.
     

Digital Circuits

  1. Investigated the theory of logic circuits, gates and binary numbers.

  2. Built a “shift-register” circuit and a rudimentary traffic light using “flip-flops”.
     

Galactic Hydrogen (Jodrell Dish)

  1. Gained practical experience of both radio-astronomical techniques and the use of astronomical coordinate systems through remote operation of a small radio telescope by measuring it's beam-width, calibrating it's sensitivity and working out where to point it in azimuth and elevation to detect a strong radio sources of neutral hydrogen.

  2. Learned about the internal motion of the Galaxy by using a 21-cm hydrogen line results obtained with the telescope.
     

Gravitational Lenses

  1. Imitated gravitational lensing with a laser and oblique lenses to understand the theory in terms of bend angles and Fermat's principle.

  2. Used a research-level modelling code to measure galaxy masses and gained an acquaintance with chi-square and degrees of freedom in a real research context.


Triode

  1. Constructed a triode valve and obtained a low pressure in a vacuum chamber using a combination of rotary and diffusion pumps.

  2. Measured I/V curves to deduce the anode slope conductance, the mutual conductance and the amplification factor of the triode.

  3. Modified the triode to obtain a larger value of amplification factor.

 

Low-Energy Gamma ray Spectroscopy

  1. Learned how to use detectors, electronics and computer to take and analyse data using a commercial system commonly used in the industry.

  2. Learned how to calibrate a Ge detector in terms of energy and efficiency.

  3. Deduced a nuclear decay scheme by measurement of gamma-ray energies and intensities, and used selection rules to deduce level properties.

  4. Determined the conversion coefficient of an isometric state in Cs(134) by a neutron activation and gamma-ray analysis.
     

Dark Matter and exoplanet detection using microlensing

  1. Understood the basic theoretical principles of microlensing, the properties of microlensing evens, how they are found and how these events can be used to study the nature of dark matter in galaxies.

  2. Wrote a program to compute the relative brightness of microlensing events as a function of time using a hypothetical model.

  3. Gained an understanding of the principles of difference imaging by creating my own difference images from a series of optical images of the Andromeda Galaxy. Hence, created a catalogue of variable objects from the difference image sequence and plotted light-curves.

  4. Investigated more complex microlensing effects, which are being used to resolve the photospheres of distant stars and to reveal the presence of extra-solar planets.
