PhD project: Multi-body flexible structures theory for space applications

Research Interests:
First a Visiting Researcher for the period January-August 2011 , focussing on rigid body attitude control using differential geometry, actually PhD student from October 2011. He obtained his M.Sc. in Space Engineering, Satellite and Orbiting Platforms specialized, at “La Sapienza”, University of Rome, Italy (Member of the European Network of Excellence in Aerospace Engineering Education). During his M.Sc. thesis he worked on Complex Multi-Body Space Structures with a thesis titled: “Characterization and closed-loop configuration development of a space manipulator demonstrator”.

From 2003 to 2006, He undertook his undergraduate studies in Aerospace Engineering at the Rome University “La Sapienza”, and he took his bachelor with the thesis work “Flight Accidents: the Maintenance Human Factor”.

His PhD project will investigate the development of multi-body flexible structures theory applied to space systems. The purposes of this project is to start from the study of short kinematic chains of rigid bodies, applying nonholonomic geometric mechanics and control theory for motion planning, thereafter, to gradually introduce complexity in order to develop the mathematical and physical tools required to approach the design of space multi-body systems.
