European Southern Observatory ESO (Garching bei Munchen, Germany)

Oracle/Sybase DBA ALMA Technical Team Leader (Oracle Streaming and GoldenGate Administrator). Head Technical Manager and Oracle Engineer ALMA Team. Linux/Unix Engineer. OEM Cloud 12c. Oracle GoldenGate International ALMA team Manager. MongoDB. SyBase DBA.

ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organization in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and is supported by Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Several other countries have expressed an interest in membership.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO), together with its international partners (NASA/NRAO and NAOJ), has built ALMA. ALMA is the most powerful telescope for observing the cool Universe — molecular gas and dust as well as the relic radiation of the Big Bang. ALMA will study the building blocks of stars, planetary systems, galaxies and life itself. As part of the project ALMA, ESO has designed the infrastructure needed for storing all the information captured by radio telescopes and thus ensure that the information will be available to all scientists. My job is to maintain and manage our infrastructure remotely from the facilities of ESO and from the Max Plank Institute in Munich. I am also responsible for ensuring the replication of data between observatories ALMA in America (Chile) and central node in Germany (Oracle Streaming and GoldenGate Principal Administrator).

Together with two more DBAs, I'm also working as SYBASE ASE (16) DBA for the VLT observatory (Very Large Telescope), at ESO. The Very Large Telescope (VLT), the largest telescope on Paranal, is composed of four separate 8.2 m (320 in) telescopes. In addition, the four main telescopes can combine their light to make a fifth instrument, the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Four auxiliary telescopes of 1.8 m (71 in) each are also part of the VLTI to make it available when the main telescopes are being used for other projects. The Sybase DB is replicated using SyBase replication 15.

SyBase IQ DBA. We have our DataWarehouse based also in SyBase Technology. We are also in charge of its administration.

MariaDB is used in our internal Library to store the scientific documentation for all our projects. We have to maintain the nodes of the MariaDB cluster as part of our daily work.
