Thesis: Wilson loops in generalized loop space and their application in Transverse Momentum Depedent Parton Distributions

Description: In this thesis I studied Wilson lines and loops, introducing a generalized loop space representation of gauge theory. This was then used to derive a conjecture for an evolution equation for Transverse Momentum Distributions using a kind of geometric renormalization scheme in this generalized loop space. During my PhD our group was invited to write a graduate textbook on applications of Wilson lines and loops in quantum field theory, as such I am also co-author of the book [7]. Next to my research assignments I also was lecturer for the exercise dasses of my supervisors course on special relativity and particle physics.

Description: As a master student I did my thesis work as a technical student at CERN, working in the LHC commissioning and updating group on intrabeam scattering in the LHC. After a theoretical study of the subject I implemented a new numerical algorithm (FORTRAN) based on Carlson Integrals, improving substantially the speed for the intrabeam blow-up and luminosity simulations for different beam set-ups in the LHC

I also compared the models with 2010 and 2011 data and observed that the measurements where within a 5-10 percent error band [ 1, which was at the time well below the possible measurement accuracies (around 15 percent at that time). Under guidance of my supervisor I worked with people of very different backgrounds, working in varying research fields (accelerator physics, particle physics, engineering,...) and I was included in various meetings and discussion [ 1.
