Profile

My work career began as a consultant in a technical consultancy company, working on proposals and studies on European Union funded civil infrastructure projects. There I was required to operate in an intrinsically multidisciplinary field, covering subjects from city planning to renewable energy production. The ability to operate in this multidisciplinary area, use ideas and models from electronic engineering and apply them to other fields is the most valuable skill obtained from this experience. Additionally, the work required good communication skills, teamwork and the ability to meet very hard deadlines under an environment with varying workloads. For the last few years, I have been involved in research in a field that is closer to my field of studies, namely electronic and electrical engineering. I completed my PhD under an awarder scholarship on August, 2012. The research area I worked on was in the field of microwave photonics and radio-over-fibre (RoF) technologies with transmission at microwave frequencies. Specifically, I worked on the distribution of wireless signals for in-door and out-door environments with low-cost laser modulation techniques. I was involved on the EU-FP7 project termed FUTON (Fibre-Optic Networks for Distributed Extendible Heterogeneous Radio Architectures and Service Provisioning), on the distribution of multicarrier 4th generation (4G) signal standards through an optical fibre infrastructure. My research looked into multiple aspects of the performance of RoF links but my main focus was on dynamic range limitations, arising from nonlinearities. The investigation I carried out included, in addition to laboratory experimentation, analytical techniques, modelling and simulations using software packages such as Matlab, Simulink and VPI (photonics). The field of RoF is a multidisciplinary one that combines two sections of engineering, namely Radio Frequency (RF) and photonics. As such the knowledge and experience I gained during my research years, apply on both photonic and RF communication systems. Following the completion of my PhD, I was employed as a research associate at the broadband and wireless communications research group at the University of Kent. Under this contract, I was involved in a project concerning the asset and human tracking through interconnected RFID readers with wireless mesh networking. Specifically, the project involved the use of low power ad-hoc mesh networks (ZigBee) to extend the reach of RFID readers for indoor and outdoor tracking. The end result consisted of some basic prototyping (interconnection of discrete ZigBee modules with RFID readers), simulation analysis using Opnet and a feasibility demonstration of the proposed network. Overall, my involvement in research resulted in many peer-reviewed publications, most of which in high standard IEEE conferences and journals in addition to project deliverables. Other specific areas of interest included the performance issues of Orthogonal Frequency-Division Modulation (OFDM) signals when transmitted through an optical fibre, RFID systems and how these can be incorporated with an optical fibre infrastructure in order to reduce deployment costs and provide high coverage and performance and the distribution of WiFi and ZigBee signals standards through optical fibre. All of these looked into physical layer effects with some experience in MAC protocol issues.
