VEGA Avionics System Engineer

Main activities and responsibilities

Introducing TTEthernet in the new VEGA Avionic evolution;

Proposing and evaluating possible future evolutions of VEGA avionic architecture and equipments;

Managing the development of the new VEGA On-Board Computer, to be introduced from the 22nd VEGA Flight;

Defining the system requirements, interfaces specifications and architecture definition of the avionic system and software for new development programs or studies.

Skills and competences used/Developed

In this role I’m using my good knowledge of the launch vehicles’ avionics systems. Team management skill is also fundamental since I have to interface with several teams of very different areas of expertise (from mechanical to electrical/electronic to SW and GNC) and different European companies.

Project management techniques are also needed to ensure that the various developments input/output are well phased and their schedule are coherent.

VEGA 2nd source Flight Program Software Development Responsible

Main activities and responsibilities

Preparing a formal proposal to ESA for a second source Flight Program Software (FPSA) for the VEGA Launcher in late 2009. This activity include definition of SoW towards all Subcontractors included in the proposal (5 subcontractors involved).

Conducting technical negotiation with the Customer (ESA) after proposal delivery up to contract signature;

Preparing all the technical documentation to ensure the successful start of the activities leading to a formal Kick-off in February 2010;

Defining the complete development plan, the verification plan, the system-level requirements for the new Flight Program SW (FPSA)

Defining and following the development of a complete set of new SW products performed alongside the main FPSA life cycle (i.e. SW tools for FPSA validation, tool for proper configuration to match the specific mission requirements, and of an OBC simulator for HW/SW integration activities).

Defining the SW Architecture and of the interfaces between FPSA SW component and GNC (included as a library) and performing technical follow-on of the detailed design, coding and testing activities (development in ADA).

Managing the complex industrial organization (4 teams composed of experts from 6 different European companies) during the complete FPSA life-cycle.

Preparing and conducting successfully all the reviews foreseen by the ECSS standards for both the FPSA and related products up to the ground qualification (achieved successfully in December 2011) and following qualification flight (May 2013).

Preparing and conducting the final Qualification Review for the complete set of missions (8 mission types). Review closed successfully in December, 2013.

Skills and competences used/Developed

In this role I managed a complex industrial organization to achieve a challenging goal (complete development – from users requirements to flight - of a Flight SW in three years). The task required excellent interpersonal skills, technical knowledge and planning. Knowledge of embedded SW development techniques for safety critical application has been a fundamental skill for this task.

VEGA On-Board Computer System Responsible

Main activities and responsibilities

Defining the System-level requirements (including HW/HW and HW/SW interfaces requirements) for the VEGA Launcher on-board computer (OBC) and relevant basic SW (LN1 and Firmware) starting from the Customer needs;

Defining the development Statement of Work in agreement with the on-board computer developer;

Defining the detailed Work-Packages for the complete development activity and performing evaluation and technical negotiation of the subcontractor proposal;

Following the development (after development activities start in mid 2002) during the complete life-cycle according ESA ECSS standards. This activity includes the preparation and conduction of the monthly technical progress meetings with the Subcontractor (RUAG Sweden) and the Customer (ESA) and the formal reviews foreseen by the standards adopted;

Defining the SW Development Environment to be adopted for the SW development, the Run-Time System and the compilation options to be used for the flight SW;

Defining of the Product Acceptance and Qualification test campaigns to ensure the on-board computer compliancy with system-level needs and VEGA mission requirements on a flight-representative HW-In-The-Loop platform. Ground qualification of the OBC was successfully achieved in June, 2007.

After successful flight qualification of the first Flight Model (VEGA first flight in February, 2012), managing the production and the operative life of the product. This means evaluating solutions for components’ obsolescence and impacts on the product configuration coming from Launch Vehicle system changes.

Skills and competences used/Developed

In this role I developed a good knowledge of hardware architectures for hard-real-time systems. I also developed knowledge on radiation hardening techniques, evaluation of SEU and MEU probability on components and radiation analysis.

Good problem solving is also extremely useful in this role for problem investigations.

Debug techniques on target by means of Logical Analyser or Extended-Debug Support Unit (E-DSU) is also a competence obtained during this activity.

LYRA Flight Program Software System Responsible

Main activities and responsibilities

Defining the System-Level requirements for the LYRA Flight Program SW (LYRA is an evolution of the VEGA Launcher with three stages instead of four developed in C using LN1 from OBC development – ADA libraries).

Following the LYRA SW development (carried on by TELESPAZIO) up to successful SW Preliminary Design Review. After such milestone SW design was paused waiting system input.

Supporting TELESPAZIO in his design and coding activity mainly for what concerns HW/SW interfaces and HW/SW integration phase.

Skills and competences used/Developed

This role was very important as it was the opportunity to learn all topics and skills needed for a flight SW development task. Several problems solved during the development of FPSA were anticipated and already analysed during this activity.

I had also the opportunity to improve my inter-personal skills in a more “relaxed” environment without the pressure present in other “more critical” developments.

Main activities and responsibilities

Definition of VEGA Launcher Failure Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) policies.

Performing the SW Criticality Analysis (SCA) for the VEGA On-Board and Ground SW. Such analysis is aimed to assign a criticality category to each SW used in the frame of the VEGA program on the basis of the possible effects of its failure (according System FMECA).

Definition of the VEGA SW development standards for each SW criticality level defined in the SCA.

Tailoring of ECSS E-40 and Q-80 standards to produce Company’s quality standards for SW development applicable to the VEGA Program.

Following the final development activities (from CDR to QR) of the SW of the four Thrust Vectoring Control units (TVC) of the VEGA stages. ELV was not the system responsible for this SW (for which the responsibility was of ESA/CNES) therefore the activity was more as reviewer.

Managing Independent SW Verification and Validation (ISVV) activities performed by Spanish company for the 1st VEGA flight program SW (developed by ASTRIUM-ST and used only for 1st VEGA flight).

In this role I developed a good understanding of Launch Vehicle System architecture. I also become familiar with ESA ECSS standards.

I learned to perform complex analyses on CPU load evaluation and task schedulability and to work together with experts from different European companies (mainly French, Swedish and Spanish).

Social skills and competences

During FPSA development I had the opportunity to improve my inter-personal skills. I had to coordinate the work of a complex industrial team (6 companies and 4 team working closely) and the relations between the team members were not always relaxed.

 

 

Organisational skills and competences

I know how to prepare and manage the schedule for a complex program. I can identify the activities on the critical path and find possible recovery actions to minimize impacts of technical/programmatic problems that can arise during such kind of programs. I developed this skill mainly during the role of FPSA Resp. and VEGA On-Board Computer System Resp.

 

 

Technical skills and competences

I know a wide range of high-level languages (ADA, C, C++). I can model a SW architecture using UML2 and SysML (ATEGO Artisan Studio). I understand assembler code (for failure investigation and code review). I know how to manage a new development both for HW and SW.

I have good problem solving skill refined during both HW and SW developments for which I was responsible and I’m familiar with HW and embedded SW development for safety critical applications.

I know very well the Mil-STD 1553B standard (at both HW and SW level) and I’m currently analysing the impacts of the replacement of this interface with the Time-Triggered Ethernet as VEGA Avionic Communication System.
