EDUCATION AND TRAINING

17/10/2013–16/04/2014
Traineeships in Study and Application of Super-resolution Techniques to the images from the OSIRIS camera onboard Rosetta
European Space Agency (ESA), European Space Astronomic Centre (ESAC), Rosetta Science Operation Development Unit, Operations Development Division, Operations Department, Directorate of Science & Robotic Exploration., Madrid (Spain)

Study a superresolution technique, and its application to the OSIRIS images. Implementation of a algorithm that is suitable for application to the OSIRIS images. The algorithm will either create a high resolution image from a single low-resolution image or increase the resolution of an image using the information that was taken at a higher resolution.

09/2009–03/04/2014
Master Degree in Telecommunication Engineering

University of Florence, Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (DET), Florence (Italy)

Major subjects: Estimation and Information Theory, Signal Processing, Image, Audio and Video Processing, Wireless Communication, Numerical Transmission, Antenna System
grade: 110/110

04/2013–09/2013
Internship at Signal Processing & Communications Laboratory

Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (DET) of the University of Florence, Florence (Italy)

Thesis Title: Methods For Single-Image Super-Resolution Based On Wavelet Transform Coefficients Modelling.
The objective of my project was the analysis and implementation of a Super-Resolution technique using the wavelet transform. After an analysis of the state-of-the-art techniques, including also classical methods based on adaptive interpolation and edge-enhancement, I have developed a new and more efficient algorithm whose performance is comparable or superior to the ones already proposed into literature.

09/2009–05/2010
Study exchange period

Tampere University of Technology, Tampere (Finland)

I studied the following subjects: Signal Compression, Digital Audio Processing and Analysis, Video Processing, Theoretical Computer Science

01/2009–07/2009
Internship at Signal Processing & Communications Laboratory

Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (DET) of the University of Florence, Florence (Italy)

Thesis Title: JPEG image authentication based on watermarking in the compressed domain.
The purpose of my project was the analysis and implementation of watermarking for authentication techniques in the JPEG domain. In particular I developed two algorithms: a fragile watermarking algorithm and a semi-fragile watermarking algorithm robust to JPEG compression. Both algorithms were able to authenticate JPEG images and to locate the corrupted areas.

09/2002–07/2009

COVER LETTER
To whom it may concern
My name is Mario and I already graduated in April 2014 with a Master in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Florence.

This degree has given me a comprehensive knowledge in many fields of engineering such as Electronics, Antennas Theory, and Networks, as well as more detailed knowledge of a few specialized area, for example Signal Processing and Image Processing.

During my period of study, I spent a year at the University of Tampere of Technology because of the Erasmus Project. From October 2013 to April 2014 I have been doing an undergraduate traineeship in the European Space Astronomic Centre (ESAC) for the project “Study and Application of Super-resolution Techniques to the images from the OSIRIS camera onboard Rosetta”. During this project, I studied several single-image super-resolution techniques and I implemented a single-frame super-resolution image technique based on multi-scale wavelet transform. This work at ESAC will be also my Master Thesis at the University of Florence. During my bachelor work, I studied many techniques of image authentication based on watermarking and I implemented two watermarking techniques, one of these techniques was robust to JPEG “attack” and fragile with respect all others manipulations.

My technical background and my traineeship at ESAC has allowed me to develop a keen interest in space related research, especially the Rosetta mission. I would be very interested in continuing space related image research into the future.

I am capable of working autonomously and I have good interpersonal and communication skills which I think will allow me to integrate well into any team.

From my experience during my traineeship at ESAC and studying abroad as part of the Erasmus Project, I really appreciate working in a multi-cultural, multi-discipline, and multi-national environment. Therefore I am willing to face challenges in every of my discipline.
