Professional Activity:

I am carrying out a research project on the study of  the 2D kinematic properties of the neutral gas (NaD 5890,5896 A) in a sample of 38 local Luminous and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies ([U]LIRGs, 31 LIRGs and 7 ULIRGs, 51 individual galaxies) observed with VIMOS/VLT. This sample covers well the less studied LIRG luminosity range, and it includes the morphological types corresponding to the different phases along the merging process (i.e., isolated disks, interacting systems, and mergers). This work differs from other  recent studies of galactic winds (e.g., Westmoquette et al. (2012)) by the comparison of the kinematics of the neutral gas and that of the ionized gas on spaxel-by-spaxel basis (0.6’’ spatial sampling) and by the ability to probe simultaneously multiple gas phases (neutral and ionized).

Later, I will extend this study to other kind of feedback mechanisms (e.g., SF occurring in outflows) in a small sample of three galaxies (hosting an AGN) by using near-IR spectroscopy data taken with Near Infrared Camera Spectrometer (NICS) mounted on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (La Palma, Islas Canarias/España).

 

Context:

It is crucial to understand the forces central to galaxy evolution, including physical feedback processes during the lifetime of a galaxy, such as winds. Multiphase galactic winds are ever present in starburst galaxies, and their main properties can directly be probed by the NaD lines produced by the neutral phase of the outflowing gas. The results for local wind could be used for a direct comparison other feedback mechanisms.

Professional Activity:

After my graduation, I was in Bologna to extend my project characterizing with multi wavelength data the X-Ray Sources around the galaxy cluster Abells1995 (e.g. looking for the optical counterparts of these sources). I studied the source-counts in the very deep and wide surveys that have been recently  performed with XMM-Newton and Chandra Observatory (e.g. C-COSMOS and XMM-COSMOS) to reveal AGN overdensities and to study the phenomenology and evolution of the galaxy/AGN population as a function of the environment. I showed my results during seminars and conferences.
