Proudest accomplishment

Lagrange Point Low Cost Mission for Space Weather          Nov 2017 – Aug 2018

As my Master’s thesis, I completed a mission design for a low cost satellite at the L1 Lagrange point to observe Space weather. I progressed through subsystem design iterations and observed a significant improvement while learning the impact of changing a single parameter leading to an optimized final design. This also occurred when calculating the link budget and I was able to determine parameters which met the requirement of a ‘real time’ data downlink. I utilized my resources with my industry supervisor, reached out to project leads for payload instrument specifications, and acquired information for spacecraft components to present a mission with strongly supported design choices. To overcome any knowledge barriers I completed extensive research on the scientific aspects of space weather and the payload instruments. This lead to developing a design for each subsystem of the satellite, the launch and trajectory, the link budget, and cost budget while meeting the requirements set by industry. The project taught me the importance of requirements, the impact of each subsystem on the entire spacecraft, and the problem solving techniques required to achieve a successful mission design.

Application of engineering concepts and tools

Analysis

Created a script in MATLAB to filter data of population densities, resulting in enhanced satellite coverage analysis by feeding array data into STK.

Configured a constellation model in STK of an industry design to compare and analyze coverage levels and determined optimal configuration.

Generated an STK link-budget, regenerated results from a professionally done budget and compared values where a strong accuracy was determined for the integrated tool.

Modeled an industry constellation in STK to determine the minimum number of satellites required for global coverage providing baseline results for initial study.

 

Orbital Dynamics and Spacecraft Control

Developed a control system in MATLAB and successfully detumbled a satellite by applying a control algorithm for momentum wheels and magnetorquers.

Developed numerous MATLAB scripts for calculating the propagation and determination of orbital dynamics.

Simulated the kinematics of a robotic manipulator and designed a controller enabling the manipulator to follow a predetermined trajectory using MATLAB and Simulink.

Design

Designed various STK orbit scenarios to compare ground station access times, eclipse frequency and duration, and target coverage duration; with the results an orbit timeline was created and requirements for the systems team, power and communication subsystems were provided.

Designed various components with CAD for engineering redesign projects; developed skills for future design work.

Completed design iterations of a canister cap and body with CAD after testing sessions, resulting in the protection and release of a payload during launch and descent.

Designed a CAD model of a satellite structure including a model of the subsystems and payload for Master’s thesis of a space weather satellite providing a deployed and stowed configuration.

Completing research and establishing connections for client development and determining possible product integration within the industry.

Telesat Canada - Systems Engineering Summer Student                  May 2015 – Aug 2015

Constructed multiple LEO configurations in STK to analyze the range of coverage levels in target areas for satellite communication users to maximize constellation efficiency.

Compared accuracy of simulated and calculated link budget results to verify STK software as an integrated and improved design tool.

Interests

I love traveling and exploring new places; my favourites have been skiing in France, driving across Canada to work in British Columbia and backpacking on my own in Prague.
