Oxford Space Systems is an award-winning space technology business that's pioneering the development of a new generation of deployable antennas and structures for spacecraft that are lighter, less complex and lower cost than those in current commercial solutions. Founded in late 2013. Invited to join as first employee, managed all internal aspects of the business including process/system definition, setup and implementation including safety, quality, finance, project/programme management, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, test, product assurance, CADM, facilities and HR. Day to day running of the business from strategy, bid writing, grant application writing, project delivery through to growing, training and coaching the team from 4 members of staff through to the current 54 staff. Heads of function line management (Project management, Analysis, RF, Design, Mechanisms, Quality/PA) reported directly to COO. Responsible for defining and creating/managing the Oxford Space Systems Apprentice Scheme to fill the engineering talent vacuum. Member of the UK National Space technician standards group– this has led to an invitation to the 2019 royal garden party at Buckingham palace in recognition of being a key member of the UKSA space engineering trailblazer group defining apprenticeship standards. Identified the need for and designed/implemented/managed Oxford Space Systems new purpose built facility which houses Harwell campus’ largest cleanroom (300sqm.) this was delivered in time and £200k under budget with no snags. Member of the NSTF (National satellite test facility) users steering group committee. Royal academy of engineering MacRobert award finalist (recognition of outstanding UK innovation in engineering).

ABSL Space Products was previously ABSL, AEA Technology Battery Systems and AEA Technology space.  This world leading multi-project matrix structured business designs, builds and tests one off/small production runs of very high value, high reliability power systems, Calibration systems and Optical systems for use on space applications such as launch vehicles and satellites. Customers include NASA, ESA, Airbus, Thales, OHB, Smiths Aerospace, ISRO, KARI, Honeywell and General Dynamics.

Deployed as trouble shooter within the business. Senior Project Manager leading business move to new site whilst responsible for recovery of an under performing Sentinel 3 Satellite flight calibration system for the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (Sentinel 3 SLSTR) project that was running 2 years late with inherited technical issues to Jena Optronik/Thales Alenia Space-Italy/ESA. Put in place risk management, baseline schedule, contract change controls, improved customer relationship by better managing expectations with realistic schedule and more frequent progress reporting.

April 2009 – January 2010 Senior Project Manager – Scott Technology Ltd New Zealand

Scott Technology Ltd designs and manufactures automation and process machinery that is sold worldwide. Joined as a Senior Project Manager, managing X-ray and Primal machine design, manufacture, install and on site commissioning whilst managing R+D robotics project. Delivered Primal machine successfully with final profit at 35% (baseline 25%) previous similar machines had all made significant loss. Implemented new processes including Sales to PM handover, statement of work writing, non conformance system, design review stage gate process, risk and issue management system. These systems have been implemented across all Scott Technology business units nationwide. Before leaving New Zealand Scott Technology Directors requested that I applied for the Operations Director role.

AWE is the Ministry of Defence facility responsible for the research, development, manufacture, assembly and maintenance of the United Kingdom’s Nuclear Deterrent. Joined the company as a Control Account Manager (Project Manager) responsible for specific specialist leading edge equipment (£25 Million) on project Hydrus (New Hydrodynamics test facility), promoted to the position of Integrated Control Account Manager (Senior Project Manager) responsible for all facility equipment (total value £150 Million) then promoted to Deputy Project Manager on a new build facility with a total value of £464 Million with a team of over 150 Engineers/Scientists and management staff. Within this role he had direct leadership of 4 project managers (each with a budget of between £4 Million - £95Million), and support functions such as Planners, Project controls, Risk and Quality. Successfully delivered the equipment design solution for this project to support Ministry of Defence “FEL gate 2” milestone within very challenging time constraints; this required optioneering, concept design and feasible design phases to be completed. Implemented effective requirements control, agreed scope and baseline definition of very complex Scientific/Engineering activities with scientific/Engineering community, managed and mentored “inexperienced in delivery” team of project managers, engineers and scientists. He was seconded to project Mensa (New Nuclear war head production facility) as the AWE Control Account Manager for MPET (Mensa Process Equipment Team) managing a team of approx. 15 Sub contract Engineers, this was a very challenging appointment as the MPET deliverables were in their infancy  and out of phase with the advancing building deliverables. Successfully delivered requirement capture, detail scheduling baseline, risk/issue register, optioneering through to feasible solution, process throughput analysis for all Mensa process equipment.

As operations manager position where he was responsible for 30 Staff and the running of the business. Grew ABSL Space Products business by 10% over 8 month period by recruiting new additions to management and technical teams and implemented effective project management/MAIT systems.

Successfully lead a project “review and recovery” on a business critical military communications equipment project with a value of £50 Million which was underperforming using a team of 20 highly qualified engineers by establishing separate teams to validate technical/contractual compliance and develop solutions, undertook root cause analysis to identify key issues, established rigorous test methodology to validate design against specification, introduced joint working arrangements with customer, implemented new configuration control system, recommended change in management structure, processes and establishment of new quality systems.

As Project Manager Team Leader managed a portfolio of projects and was awarded master sub contractor by EADS Astrium on all EADS Astrium projects while margin for all projects significantly (10 – 30%) ahead of budget and ahead of schedule.

Joined as a multidiscipline Design Engineer then promoted through positions Manufacturing Manager, Project Engineer and to Project Manager. Duties included electronic/mechanical CAD, Design office management, sub-contractor management, on site commissioning, customer training.

Turned inherited £3M project from £190k loss forecast – to £200k profit by developing effective customer management regime, Implemented effective engineering change control systems along with effective claims management procedures.

Awarded AEA Technology 1999 Engineering Innovation award for decreasing costs by 40% (goal of 10%) on standard product as part of larger project by implementing Design for Manufacture analysis to identify cost opportunities, identification and audit of potential vendors while establishing vendor communication channels to ensure effective feedback and problem resolution.
