I am  responsible for finding employees for ATG Europe’s clients  within the  European space industry  (e.g.  Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, European Space Agency  (ESA) or the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT)).

To meet  the  clients  request for manpower support  demands understanding of the  tasks and technical requirements of the position that is issued. Through technical research, the somewhat general job descriptions are  tailored  to what a hiring manager of a particular  section is really looking for.  I assess a candidate not only by matching  his/hers profile to at least  80% of the technical requirements but I also look at whether they fit within the team.

European Space Agency - ESTEC Noordwijk, The Netherlands

Wave Interaction  & Propagation

Under the supervision of Marc Bouvet I was responsible for amending the DIMITRI tool (in IDL) for reading  the Sentinel-3A  radiometric L1B data  acquired from optical sensors (e.g.  OLCI and SLSTR) for sensor  monitoring/calibration purposes.

Throughout this internship  I attended evaluation meetings with two companies that co-authored this tool (Argans  and Magellium) and contributed to the improvement of the tool’s general func- tionality. Given the progress of modifying DIMITRI  I was permitted to extend my internship  by 1 month.  In this last month I assisted the young graduate that was to continue with my project and implement  my modifications  in the DIMITRI version  4.0.  I wrote guidelines that explain  how to include new optical sensors in the DIMITRI tool and what verification and validation procedures are to be taken  to ensure that the incorporation of these new sensors is established accurately.

 

February 2011 – August 2011     Aerospace Technical  Researcher - Graduation internship

Together with a fellow classmate, in cooperation with an entrepreneur from the United States of America, I assessed whether it was feasible to transform Lelystad  Airport to a Spaceport.  This feasibility study  included  technical aspects (e.g.  the required  runway  length  or the spacecraft specifications) and  legal aspects (e.g.  crossing the lower and  upper  (civil/military) airspace or environmental hazards of supersonic flight over land).  The conclusion of this feasibility study stated that the technical and legislative requirements could be met but given the tedious political process that  overlooks such  decisions and  issues permits  regarding runway  extensions, the modification of Lelystad  Airport to a Spaceport was questionable.

Team  responsible for the  execution of Modification Orders, Tool Change Bulletins  and  also operated in projects wherein equipment was designed / revised through means of the Autodesk Inventor program in accordance with applicable ‘machinery  and equipment’ legislation. Personally responsible for making  technical drawings for a  hoist  tool for the  MD-11 carbon brakes, a pressure indicator of aircraft tires and a ‘puller’ tool of table seat hinges.

Certificate     During my internship  I attended a course at KLM about  European safety  legislation  regarding machinery and  equipment. A Conformité  Europeéne (CE) certificate  was issued after comple- tion of the course.

Propagation and Uncertainty Analysis on DIMITRI

The Database for Imaging  Multi-spectral  Instruments and  Tools for Radiometric Intercompari- son  (DIMITRI) is a tool that has  incorporated a Rayleigh-based intercomparison methodology with which it is possible to monitor and  calibrate radiometric data  (L1B) acquired from optical remote sensing instruments. The methodology simulates the propagation of waves through the atmosphere using  the Mystic and  LibRadtran Radiative Transfer models.  In this thesis a thor- ough  sensitivity  analysis is conduction on the  uncertainties associated with the  model  input, presenting the  user  with an  understanding on the  effects  of these input uncertainties on the output  of the  model.   In addition,  I have  shown  that  even  though  the  physical  model  is highly nonlinear, the propagation of uncertainties can  be achieved quite simply by assuming a linear model, avoiding the use  of computationally heavy  Monte Carlo simulations.

Space Exploration  curriculum     As a student enrolled  in the  Space Exploration  track  of the  Aerospace Engineering master, I have  been attending courses and performed assignments that have  provided  me a set of skills, knowledge and  mindset with which I am able  address the challenges of space engineering of today and tomorrow.

As part of the  course Planetary Sciences II, a group  of 4 students including myself drafted  a concept for a Triple Asteroid  Sample Return  (TASerR) space mission,  addressing the need for such  a mission  in the  future from a scientific  perspective given  the  increase in the  discovery of Near  Earth  Asteroids (NEAs).  The TASeR  project  included  a description of asteroid classi- fication and  selection, the  mission  and  sample return  concept and  finally also  addressed the Yarkovsky effect.  We were invited to ESTEC  to present our findings at the end of the project.

As part of the course Space Systems Engineering, I wrote a paper on effectiveness measures of a responsive space mission,  where  the utilization of space missions for the purpose of nat- ural disaster (earthquakes) monitoring and  mitigation was analyzed. This analysis defined  the stakeholders and  described the measures of effectiveness, e.g.  cost,  responsiveness, cover- age,  data  quality and quantity and risks of such  a mission.

During the Space Systems Engineering course I was also  introduced to Systems Engineering tools, such  as the Analytical Hierarchy  Process Trade-off (AHP-TO) tool and the N 2  chart.
