I also had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge on the subject of deployable satellites and their applications.

Thesis work in the Euro.Soft s.r.l. Company.

 

Through the thesis work I carried out the Mass Budget, the Power Budget and the Link Budget of a capsule for a small mission to Mars. The work was part of the SMS project (Small Mars Satellite) - Phase 0 ESA Project.

About the Mass Budget I evaluated the weight and the size of the entire system consisting of three main components and of their subcomponents (battery, solar panels, GNC, OBDH, PCDU, AOCS, propulsion system, etc.). The weight of the system was also evaluated considering the ESA policy of margins related to the possible presence of COTS components, weight of harness, propellant, margin on the launcher.

About the Power Budget I primarily assessed the solar radiation on the Martian surface and along the journey in order to size the solar panels of the cruise module and of the lander. On the basis of the estimate of the specific consumption of each component relative to each phase of the mission (launch, cruise, rising orbit, EDL, surface operations) and of the energy produced, the batteries were sized and a verification of the power budget was carried out in order to ensure the survival of the energy system with an adequate margin.

About the Link Budget I defined a structure of the telecommunications system. For all transmitter-receiver antennas combinations the link budget has been implemented, resulting in the Data rate and thus the bits per second that can be transmitted from Earth to Mars and back.
