We build and tested many prototypes using 3D printed parts, as well as aluminium parts to ascertain the best optical design. I also programed an Arduino to drive the first prototypes to test all the mechanics operated correctly.

    I developed a new concept for a new stencil cleaning mechanism for DEK’s SMT screen printing process machines.
    Initially I sketched out various concepts for discussion and review, once concepts were settled upon, I CAD modelled a prototype which could integrate into an existing machine for testing. The mechanism was quite compact and complex with motors driving sinusoidal cleaners etc.

I used a variety of sensors and sensing methods; light sensors, through beam, reflective and distance; proximity sensors, inductive and capacitive; pogo pins; pressure sensors etc and a variety of pneumatic cylinders, linear, rotational, with linear guides, stop cylinders dependant on the mechanism I was designing. I designed machines for several companies including Nissan, NSK bearings and Ford.

    ADM Automation designs automation equipment, machines and assembly lines. As a design engineer it was my responsibility to design machines from original concept through to final drawings, including machine processes, mechanism design, sensing methods and pneumatic systems. As a project manager it was my responsibly to oversee projects, control budgets (approx 100K per machine), place orders, deal with customers, manage timescales, deal with external machining / fabrication companies and source components/equipment etc.  I used various sensors, vision systems, rotary tables, Bosch palletised lines, pneumatics and also programmed an SMC SMAC linear actuator to measure force and travel parameters on an assembly machine for TRW.

    Bede Technology designed and manufactured special purpose equipment and machines. My role was to work with the engineering manager to deriving the processes and mechanisms required on each machine and thereafter design all the mechanical aspects of these machines, produce detail drawings and assembly drawings.

    I designed machines for Samsung, Elmwood sensors, Inter Connection Systems and Ikeda Hoover at Bede Tech.

    I gained a good understanding of tolerancing, bearing arrangements and various mechanical components, and also learnt a great deal from the toolmakers and fitters, as well as engineers.

    CAD work was undertaken using 2D AutoCAD .

    North East Innovation Centre – Newcastle Upon Tyne - 01-05-1995 to 25-10-1996

    I joined the N.E.I.C, through a local authority 6-month training scheme and was permanently employed thereafter. This training scheme allowed me to gain the necessary skills required to progress as a mechatronics/automation design engineer. In the drawing office under guidance, I carried out design and development projects, from concepts through to drawing detail and assembly drawings. Half my time at the NEI was spent in the workshops to improve my practical skills. I was taught how to use MIG welding equipment, digital readout milling machines, lathes, grinding machines and general engineering tools. I gained a basic working knowledge with pneumatic and hydraulic systems and assisted in assembling machines and troubleshooting, both in the workshop and on site.
