    PROFESSIONAL AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:


    RESEARCHER IN THE NIKHEF DETECTOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT GROUP : July 2015 – Present


    Work focused on the research and development of novel pixelated charged particle and photon detectors, aimed at high energy physics research. The detectors are based on a new form of electron multiplication transmission dynodes coupled to the Timepix 3 chip. Specific tasks include:
    - Conceptualize, design, build and commission advanced automated, vacuum based, electron beam testing facilities allowing for the measurement of transmission secondary electron yield and work functions for thin film membranes;
    - Test and analyse the response of advanced membranes, and membrane structures, in order to understand the underlying microphysics guiding their operation;
    - Development of modified Timepix1 and Timepix3 chips, as needed within the Membrane project;

    - Development of the in-house capability to control, operate, and analyse the Timepix 1 and Timepix 3 detectors (including external triggering; 2D-, 3D, spectral and visual representation of the data; and ToT calibration);
    - Testing, analysing and documenting detector system performance;
    - Membrane project representative at the Medipix collaboration;

    - Supervision and teaching for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students; and
    - Publish papers and reports, give oral presentations at meetings and international conferences, write and contribute to proposals (CERN test beams; Synchrotron beam time; Grant proposals).


    FUTURE STUDIES TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER: Jan 2013 – June 2015


    Work dedicated towards identification and realisation of enabling technologies for future Earth Observation missions; as well as European wide technology coordination and harmonisation. Specific tasks include:
    - Performing as divisional point of expertise for all detector related proposals, assessments and developments;
    - Propose, evaluate and follow innovative detector technology activities within the scope of providing enabling technologies for future Earth Observation missions;
    - Identification of critical technologies for future earth observation science missions, and initiation of technology development activities;
    - Providing support to projects technology assessments and developments;
    - Providing support to earth observation mission and instrument reviews;
    - Providing support to future mission studies;
    - Representing ESA Earth Observation interests in European Industrial, Agency and Institutional wide technology harmonisation, spanning all ground station, platform, and payload related technologies; and
    - Overview and summarize agency research activities in related areas to identify gaps and needs, as well as support in the subsequent formalisation of technology development roadmaps.


    RESEARCH FELLOW: Oct. 2010 – Dec. 2012

    Research directed towards the development of detector technology for X-ray, γ-ray and neutron detection to be use in future space missions. Tasks and accomplishments include:
    - Investigations into the degrading factors preventing fano limited energy resolution in compound semiconductors. Has led to development of models for the underlying physics causing dynamic polarization in TlBr and spectral degradation due to Te inclusions in CdZnTe;
    - Development of CeBr3 and SrI2 scintillator crystals. 3” CeBr3 crystals have been realised with an energy resolution close to LaBr3 and a significantly lower background. The crystals were successfully coupled to a SPM specifically designed for high blue photon efficiency (parallel ESA activity development);
    - Development of a solid state, B based, thin film neutron detector. Further investigations and discussion with interested industrial parties regarding commercialisation are undergoing;
    - Development of in-house testing facilities; planning and performing experiments at large scale European testing facilities (National Laboratories); development of data analysis pipelines for prototype instruments;
    - Investigations into the response and limitations of pixelated Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC’s). Achieved results has led to the Timepix detector being reproduced in space qualified components and launched on the ProbaV satellite (SATRAM instrument);
    - Responsible for running ESA contract: Development of a solid-state neutron detector for planetary missions; and
    - Producing specifications, processing steps and providing support for industry with respect to development of devices under ESA contract.


    RESEARCH FELLOW: Jan. 2010 – Sept. 2010

    Research directed towards the continued development of a fully automized rTEDDI system as well as feasibility studies into the development of a spectrally resolved CT system using the HEXITEC detector. Tasks and accomplishments include:
    - Investigation into the effect of different detector media choices for the HEXITEC X-ray detector (CdTe vs. CdZnTe);
    - Development and verification of detector correction algorithms for the HEXITEC detector;
    - Investigation into the feasibility of using the HEXITEC detector to produce a spectrally resolving CT imaging system. Identification of atomic species within a bulk sample was successfully obtained;
    - Investigation into the limitations of a CsI scintillator coupled CMOS X-ray detector under development for use as the station detector for the JEEP beamline at the Diamond synchrotron light source;
    - Integration and verification of fully automised rTEDDI control system (x-, y-, z- and rotational stages);
    - Produced and provided requirements documentation for a full rTEDDI data analysis suite to industry;
    - Evaluation of pixelated collimator structures (Pb-glass and Mo based) using CT and Xray scanning beam measurements; and
    - Supervising Ph. D. and M. Sc. Students.


    PH.D. STUDIES: Sept. 2006 – Dec. 2009

    The research was concerned with full system instrument development of a novel X-ray based imaging technique (rTEDDI). The final result of My PhD was a fully characterized prototype imaging system. Specific developments included:
    - Detector media characterization and performance evaluation;
    - Development and evaluation of pixelated, energy resolving ASIC’s (HEXITEC ASIC and ERD2004 ASIC);
    - Development of detector analysis and image visualisation software;
    - Development and verification of detector correction algorithms;
    - rTEDDI full system integration and verification;
    - Studies of rTEDDI system performance and identification of key system limitations;
    - State of the art, pixelated collimator structure; and
    - Supervise M. Sc. Students.


    M. SC. STUDIES: Sept. 2004 – June 2006

    The studies where directed towards semiconductor technology and physics (major), and optoelectronics and photonics (minor). The degree project concerned investigations of the physical principles guiding the operation of novel quantum dot incorporated into quantum well IR detectors developed within the project. Investigations included:
    - Identification and sequencing of the physical principles leading to the flow of photocurrent in the novel devices;
    - Tunnability of energy detection range with variation of the applied bias;
    - The effect of electrode configuration on the above mentioned phenomena;
    - Leakage current measurements; and
    - Polarization dependence.
