    MetOp SG Consulting and Interim Programme Management 2015-present

    Thomas Keating Ltd has almost unique expertise and track record in terahertz physics and instrument making, and in 2015 won MetOp SG projects for the ICI and MWS instruments worth €10million. Customers: Airbus UK, Airbus CASA.

    o  Build a space-dedicated business able to deliver the MetOp SG programme

    A 2.5-year general management assignment to turn around a challenged business and project portfolio. Reporting directly into the Zurich-based Vice President Aerospace & Defense, before moving under the Vice President for Advanced Systems in California.

    Head of Project Management 2010-2012

    Responsibility

    o  Providing governance for a rolling portfolio of up to 30 live contracts across 5 product groups (deployable space structures, imaging/landing LIDAR, lithium-ion batteries for spacecraft, microwave and infra-red calibration loads for satellite mounted radiometers)

    o  Line management to the project management teams

    o  Continuous improvement of project management within the organisation.

    o  Improved project governance, implementing processes based around the APM and ECSS (European Cooperation for Space Standardization) project management methodologies and using the Microsoft Project Server project portfolio management (PPM) system.

    o  Built a strong team of project- and programme-managers including succession planning

    o  Improved tools and processes with a new ERP system implementation, business-wide risk management system, resource management process, milestone tracking, standardisation of tools and templates, project management team intranet portal, work package management system.


    Project Manager 2008-2010

    Responsibility

    o  Managing £1million+ space hardware projects across 3 product groups (lithium-ion batteries, microwave and infra-red calibration loads).

    Key Achievements

    Building and leading international industrial-academic teams through the full project life cycle from pre-bid to delivery:

    o  EarthCARE Multispectral Imager (MSI) black bodies for Surrey Satellites (SSTL)

    o  Low Mass Calibration Load (LMCL) for European Space Agency (ESA)

    o  Microwave Radiometer (MWR) black bodies for Airbus Spain


    o  Swarm batteries for Airbus Germany.


    Project Engineering Lead 2006-2008

    Responsibility

    o  Technical Manager for some of ABSL’s largest spacecraft battery projects


    o  Responsible for the performance of the delivered product (a mission critical system) and all engineering from development of concept through manufacture, test and delivery. Included thermal, mechanical and EEE (electrical, electronic and electromechanical) design and analysis.

    Key Achievements

    This hardware is now operating in low Earth orbit, solar orbit and around the Moon (LCROSS is buried deep inside a lunar crater):

    o  Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) for NASA Goddard

    o  Lunar Crater Observation & Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) for Northrop / NASA Ames

    o  Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) for NASA Goddard


    o  24AH for Swales / US DoD

    o  Gravity Field and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) for Airbus / ESA

    o  TanDem-X for Airbus / ESA.

    Attended the launch of the LRO/LCROSS mission from the Kennedy Space Centre as a guest of NASA Goddard.



    TRW Aeronautical Systems, Merseyside, UK

    After changing ownership in 2001 this lean manufacturing site continued to streamline its operations and processes, fast-tracking a small number of graduates into leadership positions.


    Deputy Operations Manager & Logistics Team Leader 2001-2002

    Responsibility

    o  Deputy Operations Manager of a lean manufacturing module with 60 personnel and £12million annual sales


    o  Cost, quality and delivery performance of the manufacturing module and its key suppliers

    o  Line management of a seven-person team.

    Key Achievements

    o  Ran a supplier development programme, improving cost, quality and delivery performance

    o  Led lean improvement projects to reduce lead times by 20% and inventory by 36% in under 12 months, achieving £300k savings.



    Lucas Aerospace, Merseyside, UK

    A third-tier manufacturer for the aerospace industry, the site supplied direct line feed wing-sets for Airbus assembly lines as well as helicopter spares for the UK government.


    Continuous Improvement Team 2000-2001

    Responsibility

    o  Intensively trained then deployed as an internal lean manufacturing consultant, I worked with business leaders and teams to improve the flow of materials and information.

    Key Achievements

    o  Implemented and led an effective program of mini, team-based, root cause analysis projects, which achieved £200k scrap savings and 54% reduction in quality costs


    o  Supported design and realisation of £1.7million lean production cell for Airbus A380

    o  Project managed a new Kanban system, working with suppliers to achieve direct line feed.



    BNFL Instruments, Sellafield Nuclear Site, Cumbria, UK

    A wholly owned subsidiary of British Nuclear Fuels plc., providing instrumentation and services for the measurement of nuclear materials.
