Senior Combustion Device Engineer

About the role:
You will be leading the development of the thrust chamber and combustion devices of the Arcos aerospike engine and Kronos full-flow staged combustion engine. You will be supporting the development of the thrust chambers for the U-Nyx family of in-space propulsion systems. You will be working in the Combustion Devices team, in the Propulsion department, closely interacting with the Systems, Turbopump, and Feed System teams. You will be joining exciting projects that are shaping the future on space propulsion, from aerospike to full-flow staged combustion technologies to build the future very-high thrust engine of Europe.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of thrust chambers and combustion devices for the Arcos aerospike engine and Kronos full-flow staged combustion engine
- Support the design, analysis, and optimization of thrusters for the U-Nyx in-space propulsion systems
- Ensure that thrust chamber designs meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements
- Work closely with the Combustion Devices team within the Propulsion department
- Collaborate with the Systems, Turbopump, Feed System, CFD, and Mechanical teams to ensure seamless integration and functionality
- Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets to ensure successful completion of thrust chamber development milestones
- Conduct regular progress reviews and report on project status to stakeholders
- Lead problem-solving efforts and drive innovation in thrust chamber technology
- Plan and oversee testing and validation activities for thrust chambers
- Analyse test data and implement design improvements based on test results
- Ensure all design and development activities are thoroughly documented
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in thrust chamber and propulsion technologies
- Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance thrust chamber performance and efficiency
What you need to be successful:
- Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in thrust chamber or rocket engine development
- In-depth knowledge of thrust chamber design, analysis, and optimization for rocket engines
- Strong understanding of liquid rocket engine systems and their subsystems, including aerospike and full-flow staged combustion technologies
- Proficiency in using advanced simulation tools (e.g., CFD, FEA) for analyzing fluid dynamics and structural integrity
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements for space propulsion systems
- Experience with high-thrust engine development projects
- Ability to analyze complex problems and develop innovative solutions
- Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities
- Proven ability to manage projects, including timelines, resources, and budgets
- Experience in systems engineering and managing complex systems
Other useful skills:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Previous involvement in European space propulsion projects
- Knowledge of advanced materials and manufacturing techniques for thrust chambers
- Experience with cryogenic propellants and their handling
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to evolving project requirements
- Fluent in English; proficiency in Spanish and French is a plus
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and reliability of designs and analyses
- Capability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
