Propulsion System Models Principal Engineer

The Exploration Company

Bordeaux, Munich or Turin

We are seeking an experienced and talented Principal Propulsion System Models Engineer, to lead the development, testing, and qualification of propulsion systems for our Nyx Earth, our cutting-edge orbital vehicle for cargo transportation to and from the ISS.

This is a key leadership role that requires technical expertise in spacecraft propulsion systems, a strong track record in managing complex engineering projects, and proven experience in leading and mentoring teams. As the Propulsion Development Models Principal Engineer, you will oversee the design, development and building and contribute to the operation of the Propulsion Qualification Model and the Hydraulic Models, ensuring that we can qualify our propulsion system via these models.

Key responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Oversee the design, development, and building, and contribute to the testing of the Propulsion Qualification Model and of the Hydraulic Models for the Nyx Earth spacecraft.
  • Ensure compliance with technical specifications, program schedules, and performance requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines, such as avionics, thermal, and systems engineering, to ensure seamless integration of propulsion systems into the overall spacecraft architecture.
  • Come up with creative technical solutions to minimize costs and optimize planning, while being still flight representative.

Project and Program Management

  • Define project milestones and deliverables for the propulsion qualification models, in a context of parallelization of the proto flight and its qualification on the ground.
  • Monitor progress, manage risks, and ensure that program goals are met within budget and on schedule.

People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers working on the propulsion models.
  • Establish clear expectations and provide ongoing feedback, performance reviews, and career development guidance to team members.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture, promoting innovation, accountability, and excellence.

What we would love to see from you:

  • Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in spacecraft propulsion systems development, with significant exposure to qualification testing and environmental validation processes.
  • Proven leadership experience, with a minimum of 3 years managing engineering teams or leading complex, multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong understanding of chemical propulsion systems and associated subsystems (e.g., tanks, valves, thrusters). An experience in MON-MMH is a plus.
  • Experience with propulsion system analysis, modelling, and simulation tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor technical teams, fostering collaboration and professional growth.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, scheduling, and risk management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Capacity to travel to test sites and partner facilities as required.
  • Fluency in English.
