Experienced Ion Thruster Engineer

OSMOS X

Rennes, France

About us

At OSMOS X, we're revolutionizing space logistics and orbital servicing, transforming how satellites are transported and how space debris is managed.

Our patented plasma propulsion system - born from decades of particle accelerator research - delivers disrupting thrust-to-power ratios and unprecedented efficiency (Isp). Designed for “last-mile” operations in space, it enables the rapid transfer of satellites from launch drop-off points to final orbital positions.

Backed by key industry leaders and a growing team of experts, we are entering a critical development phase and seeking a skilled Ion Thruster Engineer to help us build and qualify our next-generation Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) propulsion system.

Your Role

As an Ion thruster engineer at OSMOS X, you will take a leading role in the design, development, and testing of our ECR- based ion thruster technology, from pre-design to flight! This is a unique opportunity to apply your skills in a dynamic environment, lead a project from the start and grow with OSMOS X.

International candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead design and optimization of ion thruster from pre-design to space product. Manage the development/procurement of all subsystems: neutralizer, HV supply, RF generator…;
  • Oversee the development of the propulsion test bench, including assembly, instrumentation (diag tools for plasma), and automation;
  • Plan and execute comprehensive validation campaigns to characterize plasma behavior, thrust performance, and system stability;
  • Analyze test data and iterate on system design to meet mission-level requirements for in-orbit deployment;
  • Ensure the thruster system is qualified for integration into satellite platforms, addressing environmental constraints (thermal, vibration, grounding, etc.).

Ideal Profile

Education & Experience

Ph.D. in space applied electric propulsion (knowledge in plasma physics is a plus), or related field OR engineering degree with 3-5 years of industry experience working on space-grade electric propulsion systems.

Proven expertise in electric thruster technology (knowledge in RF-powered ion thruster is a plus).

Bonus points if hands-on experience with vacuum chamber test setups, diagnostics (e.g., Langmuir probes, Faraday cups), and thruster integration.

Technical Skills

  • Fine understanding of space propulsion systems technology and physics;
  • Strong knowledge in space environment;
  • Knowledge in propulsion system modeling tools (e.g., COMSOL, SPIS, or custom plasma solvers);
  • Bonus if knowledge in RF systems, magnetic confinement, ion acceleration, and plasma generation mechanisms.

Soft skills

  • Strong technical leadership and strategic vision;
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset;
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills;
  • Ability to drive execution while staying open to feedback and new ideas;
  • Humble, hands-on, and mission-driven personality.
