Hardware Engineer

AIRMO

Berlin, Germany

The Role

AIRMO is looking for a hands-on, talented Hardware Engineer to own the prototyping and development of our next-generation air and space instruments. You’ll be at the heart of building our payload hardware for satellite missions — pushing boundaries, iterating fast, and turning bold ideas into real-world systems.

Your responsibilities in AIRMO

Your tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, build, and test hardware prototypes for AIRMO's key instruments;
  • Create rapid, iterative prototypes and custom parts using various fabrication techniques;
  • Assemble, modify, and troubleshoot complex hardware systems;
  • Collaborate with optics engineers on the design and testing of optical components;
  • Perform comprehensive testing, including performance, environmental, and system validation;
  • Innovate with a "pirate mentality," exploring unconventional approaches to engineering challenges;
  • Maintain detailed documentation of hardware designs, iterations, and test results;
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate hardware into payload systems.

What you should bring to AIRMO

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in mechanical, aerospace, or electronics engineering;
  • 2+ years of experience in hardware development, preferably in aerospace or robotics;
  • Strong expertise in prototyping, including 3D printing, CNC machining, and manual fabrication;
  • Hands-on experience with soldering, assembling, and debugging electronics;
  • Familiarity with optical systems, including lenses, mirrors, and alignment processes;
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and a creative, "think-outside-the-box" mindset;
  • High tolerance for experimentation and drive to test, learn, and improve;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while balancing multiple priorities;
  • Enthusiasm for climate-tech and passion for hardware innovation;
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.

Requirements

The minimum requirements for applicants include:

  • Ability to set up a Raspberry Pi in under 10 seconds;
  • Skill to design a lens casing in a blink of an eye;
  • Comfortable with rapid prototyping and on-the-fly problem-solving.

This is a rare chance to build real systems that go to the edge of the atmosphere — and beyond. If you're ready to get your hands dirty and help shape the future of space-based environmental monitoring, we want to hear from you.
