
DestinE Data Lake User Engagement Manager

We are looking for candidates with a Master's or PhD in engineering, computer science, Earth Observation (EO), geospatial data, or another discipline relevant to the role with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience to join our DestinE team at our client EUMETSAT in Darmstadt.
Destination Earth (DestinE) is a flagship initiative of the European Commission to develop a highly accurate digital representation of the Earth system, enabling advanced modelling, monitoring and simulation of natural phenomena and human activities. EUMETSAT is responsible for the DestinE Data Lake, providing access to Earth Observation data and associated services that underpin the programme.
The position requires the ability to combine service management with technical user engagement, leading the development and delivery of training and outreach activities while working closely with EUMETSAT and the wider DestinE community. The ideal candidate must be equally comfortable discussing programme priorities with senior stakeholders, technical implementation with engineering teams, and scientific workflows with researchers and service developers.
The successful candidate will lead a team of 4 people and the delivery of the DestinE Data Lake User Engagement Service (DUES) on behalf of EUMETSAT, ensuring effective engagement with the scientific and technical user community through strategic stakeholder management, high-quality technical training, and continuous improvement of user-facing services. The role supports the successful adoption of the DestinE Data Lake by translating user requirements into practical engagement activities, training resources and service enhancements.
Key accountabilities include:
- Leading the delivery and continuous improvement of the DestinE Data Lake User Engagement Service;
- Monitoring service delivery, reporting progress, risks and opportunities;
- Managing stakeholder engagement across EUMETSAT, platform engineering teams, service developers and user communities;
- Leading the design and delivery of technical training, workshops and user engagement activities;
- Capturing user requirements and operational feedback to inform service evolution;
- Contributing to the strategic development of user engagement activities supporting the DestinE programme.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Extensive experience managing complex technical services or programmes involving multiple organisations, stakeholders and delivery partners;
- Proven ability to build effective relationships and influence senior stakeholders across scientific, technical and operational communities;
- Strong understanding of Earth Observation data, cloud-based data services and modern scientific computing environments, with the ability to quickly assimilate new technologies;
- Demonstrable experience translating user requirements into service improvements, ensuring user needs inform technical and strategic decision-making;
- Experience designing and delivering high-quality technical training and engagement activities for diverse scientific and technical audiences;
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to users, developers and senior decision-makers;
- Broad appreciation of emerging Earth Observation and Digital Twin applications, and the ability to identify opportunities for new services and user communities;
- Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with a proactive, user-focused approach and the ability to operate effectively in a complex international environment.
Key activities:
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a range of activities in support of the DestinE Data Lake User Engagement Service such as:
- Plan, coordinate and monitor delivery of the User Engagement Service, managing priorities, resources, risks and reporting to ensure successful execution of the contract;
- Identify user needs, emerging use cases and adoption barriers, translating these into user engagement activities, training resources and recommendations for service evolution;
- Develop, maintain and deliver high-quality technical training, including workshops, webinars, tutorials, demonstrations and supporting documentation that enable users to effectively exploit the capabilities of the DestinE Data Lake and its associated Edge Services;
- Design practical usage scenarios, example workflows and technical demonstrations that showcase the application of the DestinE platform across a range of Earth Observation and Digital Twin use cases;
- Provide user support by responding to technical queries, curating user-facing documentation and knowledge resources, and coordinating with thematic and technical experts where appropriate;
- Build and maintain effective relationships with EUMETSAT staff, platform engineering teams, service developers and user communities to promote collaboration and ensure effective communication;
- Gather, analyse and communicate user feedback and operational experience to support continuous improvement of the User Engagement Service and the evolution of the DestinE Data Lake;
- Coordinate and contribute to community engagement activities, including conferences, workshops, outreach events and the biannual Destination Earth User Exchanges organised jointly by ESA, EUMETSAT and ECMWF;
- Support the planning, coordination and reporting of User Engagement Service activities, ensuring delivery aligns with contractual commitments and the strategic objectives of the DestinE programme.
