    About EDRS:

The objectives of the European Data Relay Satellite System (EDRS) initiative is to improve the quality of the data service and thereby enhance the operational reliability and independence of European and Canadian space infrastructures.
The improvement in the quality of the data service is to be provided by a space based data relay sys-tem supporting data links between user spacecraft in low earth orbit (LEO) and user ground stations. In particular, the services offered by earth observation missions will be upgraded considerably since the EDRS will enable such missions to offer near real time access to data for example for disaster relief and security applications without being subject to geographical or weather constraints.
Today space based data relay services are not offered on a commercial basis and are available only for institutional use to a few nations in the world. The EDRS will make space based data relay ser-vices available to European and Canadian space projects.
