    We are looking to further enhance our team by

    Flight Dynamics System Software Engineer

    You will be based initially for 2 years at our client’s headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Extension of a further 2 years may be possible. In this large European Agency you will find an excellent and modern working environment with challenging tasks and responsibilities.

    Your Tasks Include:

    The key person will provide his/her prime support to the Mission Control Applications and

    Tools Team and he/she will support:

    • The evolution and maintenance of the Flight Dynamics Systems for LEO missions.
    • The requirements specification, design, implementation, integration and verification of Flight Dynamics Systems for new LEO Programmes (Phase-B/C/D), including the setting up of the related maintenance arrangements and processes.
    • The technical coordination in the team of the different parallel activities involving the Flight Dynamics Systems for LEO missions.

    The tasks of the key person will typically include:

    Maintenance and Evolution Activities

    • Reengineering activities: analysis of the porting of some subsystems to state-of-the-art technologies, trade-off studies of various technologies, software design of the technical solutions, following the procurement of the changes with external contractors and verification testing of the changes.
    • Evolutions and changes: generation and/or analysis of user-driven and maintenance driven software requirements, software design of the technical solutions, following the procurement of the changes with external contractors and verification testing of the changes.
    • Preventive and corrective maintenance: including the investigation and correction (or following the corrections implemented by external contractors) of anomalies in the software facilities and verification testing of the fixes.
    • Maintenance test procedures: generation and updates of maintenance test procedures at software facility level and at system level.
    • Support and development of the verification infrastructure: development and/or procurement of scripts I tools to perform installation checks, non-regression, functional and performance testing. Analysis and implementation of mechanisms or tools allowing the automatic or semi-automatic verification testing of the application software.
    • Coordination of the production of new software releases or patches, delivery acceptance and installation on-site: This activity includes the technical coordination the production by an external contractor of new releases or patches of the application software, liaison with the Client operational users, participation in technical reviews, participation in factory (at contractor premises) acceptance testing campaigns and coordination of the installation of the releases or patches on-site.
    • Execution and coordination of software verification and non-regression testing campaigns: This activity includes preparation of test data, running the test procedures on the target system, generation of test reports, analysis of results and troubleshooting of problems.
    • Software support: software support to the end-users of the application software.
    • Ensure operations continuity: by provision of on-call services and software support to operations.
    • Documentation: generation and updates of technical documents.
    • Technical point of contact for maintenance contractors: acting as point of contact with the contractor for technical discussions, review of technical documentation from the contractor, organizing periodical technical meetings with the contractor.


    Support to new Missions Phase-B activities

    Requirements engineering

    • Participation in the functional analysis and decomposition of the Ground Segment requirements in the domain of Flight Dynamics System.
    • Support the definition of Ground Segment requirements in the area of the Flight Dynamics System. Participation in workshops and review meetings.
    • Interfacing with Operations to consolidate the operational concept in the Flight Dynamics System requirements.
    • Support the identification of the verification method and initial test cases for the Flight Dynamics System requirements.
    • Incorporate the reuse of the Client Flight Dynamics System kernel products in the Ground Segment requirements.
    • Interfacing with the Flight Dynamics System kernel product experts in the MCA Team to coordinate their contributions to the requirements definition.

     System Architectural design

    • Support the generation of the architectural system level design of the Flight Dynamics System as part of the Ground Segment.
    • Support the production of design models using Systems Engineering and CASE tools.
    • Support the definition and documentation of all interfaces (IRDs/ICDs) between the elements of the Flight Dynamics System and other Ground Segment or external elements.
    • Incorporate the reuse of the Client’s Flight Dynamics System kernel products in the Ground Segment design.


    Support to new Missions Phase-C/D activities

    Support to Flight Dynamics System implementation

    • Support to the requirement and design engineering activities as part of the applications development.
    • Participation and contribution in requirements, design and implementation reviews both internal and with external contractors.
    • Follow the software development by external contractors of the Flight Dynamics System.

    Support to IV & V and Acceptance

    • Participation in verification readiness reviews and verification testing campaigns both internal and with external contractors.


    Technical coordination of the parallel activities involving the Flight Dynamics Systems for LEO missions

    • Support to the technical coordination of all the activities in the team where the Client’s LEO Flight Dynamics Systems are involved. These activities comprise at the moment the maintenance and evolution for missions under routine operations, reengineering activities and the reuse of the Client’s Flight Dynamics System in new Programmes.



    Your Profile:

    In addition to having a University degree in a relevant engineering discipline, the key person shall demonstrate significant knowledge and experience in the area of specification, design, implementation, verification and maintenance of Flight Dynamics Systems. The key person shall have skills and experience in the following mandatory areas:

    Domain Skills

    • Knowledge of the analytical principles for orbit determination and control of LEO spacecraft.
    • Experience (minimum 5 years) in the definition of software requirements, architectural design, implementation and maintenance of Satellite Flight Dynamics Systems in the context of LEO missions based on the ESAIESOC NAPEOS (Navigation Package for Earth Observation Satellite).

    Software Development, Verification & Maintenance Skills

    • Experience (minimum 5 years) in the full cycle of development and maintenance of application software, preferably for Satellite Flight Dynamics Systems, following formal software engineering processes. This includes user and system requirement analysis, software requirement engineering, software design, implementation, corrective and evolutive maintenance activities.
    • Experience (minimum 3 years) in IV & V (integration, verification and validation) activities for Flight Dynamics Systems following formal engineering processes. This includes requirement verification, system and subsystem integration, generation of test plan and test procedures, non-regression testing, generation of test data, generation of test tools, running the test procedures on the target system, generation of test reports and anomaly tracking.

    Software Engineering Skills

    • Experience (minimum 3 years) in designing and developing software components and applications using Object Oriented (00) approach (including design patterns).
    • Experience (minimum 3 years) in designing and developing software applications using Java and related technologies.


    It would be a distinct advantage for the key person to have knowledge and/or experience with some of the following:

    Domain Skills

    • Experience with software development and maintenance of Tools using the Orekit space dynamics library.
    • Experience in integration of Flight Dynamics Systems with Mission Control Systems based on MICONYS® software suite from ESAIESOC.
    • Experience in integration of Flight Dynamics Systems with Mission Planning Systems.
    • Experience with support to operations for Satellite Flight Dynamics Systems.

    System Maintenance Skills

    • Experience in being the technical point of contact for contractors working at off-site premises and responsible for application software evolution and maintenance.

    Software Technology Skills

    • IBM DOORS requirement management Tool.
    • Experience in the usage of software CASE design tools (e.g. "Enterprise Architect" and/or "MagicDraw").
    • Experience in developing software applications using interfaces to relational database management systems (RDBMS) and experience with data model design for RDBMS.
    • Unified Modelling Language (UML) for software design.
    • Linux Operating System.
    • XML processing: schema design, validation, parser libraries, transformation (XSLT) and XPath.
    • Experience in designing, developing and maintaining software client applications using Eclipse as HMI framework (Rich Client Platform).
    • Experience in designing and developing component based software applications using formal techniques (e.g. OSGi).
    • Experience using tools for the automation of software testing.

    The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other. Good communication skills would be also an advantage.

    The key person shall also be assessed for the following skills and qualities:

    • Working proactively with the minimum of supervision in an individual or team environment.
    • Conducting activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, working calmly and correctly under stress.
    • Working in teams and sharing expertise and experience with other team members.

    • Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills and be confident to deal with a wide variety of people.
