    We are looking to further enhance our team by

    Copernicus System Operations Senior Engineer

    You will be based initially for 2 years at our client’s headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Extension of a further 2 years may be possible. In this large European Agency you will find an excellent and modern working environment with challenging tasks and responsibilities.

    Your Tasks Include:

    The consultant shall provide support to the development and operation of the Copernicus

    Sentinel-3 Ground Segment, as well as its evolution. Main duties will include the support to:

    • System operations in a real-time operations environment;
    • Manual and Automated system and satellite operations (including planning and scheduling).
    • Flight operations segment monitoring and reporting;
    • Communications systems operations;
    • Security operations;
    • Ensuring Business Continuity;
    • System Evolutions.

    The consultant will be responsible for the definition and/or maintenance of the routine operations procedures pertaining to system operations and the interfaces of the key systems within the Sentinel-3 ground segment, in accordance with the established Client’s Operations Department configuration management and quality assurance practices.

    The consultant will acquire and maintain a System-wide view of the Sentinel-3 ground segment. In particular, the consultant will maintain operational expertise on all aspects of the FOS.

    The consultant will review any planned changes to the system configurations for the Sentinel-3 ground segment, and support the investigation of anomalies encountered through the routine system and ground segment operations.

    The consultant will provide support to the development and operations preparation for recurrent Sentinel-3 satellites.

    The consultant will interface with project teams on the implementation of system upgrades to support major operations projects, including System Mid-Term Evolution Plan, recurrent satellites, and any System hardware and operating system obsolescence upgrade.

    The consultant will perform the following routine operations tasks:

    • Definition and maintenance of system operations procedures, including System and ground segment procedures and operations guides;
    • Liaison with the spacecraft operations team to ensure the continuity and optimization of spacecraft monitoring and control activities;
    • Liaison and coordination with the ground segment facility operations teams and system operations analysts to ensure the continuity and optimization of ground segment and mission operations (through procedure and operations guide updates, configuration changes, database or user interface changes, etc.);
    • Production and maintenance of operations documentation (Joint Operations Rules and Procedures, Operations Interface Control Documents etc.);
    • Interface and coordination with the systems maintenance teams and industry representatives to ensure optimized performance, including participating in the definition and implementation of any changes;
    • Provision of support to operational ground segment analyses;
    • Provision of stand-by/on-call support as system operations engineer, on an "as needed" basis. This will be coordinated through the normal on-call process;
    • Provision of support, as required, to critical operations;
    • Processing and coordination of system anomalies, their documentation, investigation, classification and resolution/mitigation, including participation in Anomaly Review Boards;
    • Participation in technical meetings, formal reviews, and scheduling and planning meetings;
    • Processing and coordination of system modifications, including their documentation, approval, and implementation, including participation in Change Review Boards;
    • Support to, and participation in, the functional verification and operational validation of system upgrades and evolutions, both standalone and in the context of an overall ground segment;
    • Provision of training, through written materials, practical demonstrations and presentations, to other members of the Operations Team.

     

    Your Profile:

    In addition to having a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, the Consultant shall have at least 5 years of experience of spacecraft and related ground segment operations, in particular:

    • Experience of Ground Segment System Operations to support Low Earth Orbit (LEO), 3-Axis Stabilized Spacecraft during operation preparation, LEOP, commissioning and routine operations phases;
    • Development and maintenance of complex operational ground systems, preferably for Earth Observation spacecraft;
    • FOS Engineering support for the development of major upgrades I new ground systems in a high availability 24/7 operational environment;
    • Satellite monitoring and control systems;
    • Operational Monitoring of near real time data flows in large computer networks;
    • Full development cycle of large systems, from the definition of requirements to system design and operations;
    • Investigation into anomalies, their documentation, classification and correction/mitigation, participation in Anomaly Review Boards and, where applicable, Operations Incident investigation and review activities;
    • Familiarity with the ECSS standards;
    • Experience with development and validation of operational ground segment and associated operations procedures for nominal and contingency- recovery cases;
    • Familiarity with procedure Change control and configuration management of ground segment operational systems.

    Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage for the Consultant to have experience with some of the following:

    • Definition, management and traceability of complex requirements structure; experience in the use of tools (e.g. DOORS);
    • Definition of operations interfaces and processes with external partners;
    • Automated operations;
    • Development of system analysis, reporting and monitoring tools;
    • Space - Ground Interface definition;
    • Ground Stations operation and maintenance;
    • Experience with modem satellite M&C systems (e.g. SCOS2K control system);
    • Experience of development, maintenance and operation of medium to large size applications;
    • Experience and proven application of development using Java, Perl, Oracle, operating system scripting languages, and XML technologies;
    • Experience of modem system architectures in the area of real-time data services and file based data delivery;
    • Communications protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, MBSS);
    • Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) formats;
    • Altimetry imaging and/or sounding instrumentation for Earth Observation spacecraft;
    • Experience in development of analysis and reporting tools.

    The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other. Good communication skills would be also an advantage.
