We are looking to further enhance our team by adding a
EPS-SG Programme Scientist
You will be based initially for 2 years at our client’s headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Extension of a further 2 years may be possible. In this large European Agency you will find an excellent and modern working environment with challenging tasks and responsibilities.
The activities for this position will include scientific aspects related to the development of the product processing functions of the optical imaging missions in the EPS-SG ground segment.
The key person will provide consultancy to the Remote Sensing and Products Division of the Technical and Science Support Department.
The tasks of the key person will include:
Refinement of product generation specifications for the product processing facilities;
Prototyping of product generation functions;
Refinement of product contents and format specifications;
Refinement of auxiliary data specifications;
Preparation of test data;
Preparation of calibration-validation plans;
Contribution to the generation of performance budgets;
Assessment of results from external studies;
Contribution to the initiation of scientific support studies;
System meetings and activities of instrument functional chain teams (IFCT)1;
Participation in ground segment and/or instrument reviews, progress and technical meetings.
The consultancy will involve close cross-divisional interactions and interface with experts in various disciplines (system engineering, instruments, ground segment, operations, science).
The key person shall have the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks without supervision.
The key person shall have the following experience and background:
University degree in remote sensing, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or equivalent;
At least three years of experience in the field of passive microwave remote sensing in one or more of the areas listed above, including involvement in processing of satellite data up to level 1 (calibrated / geo-located radiances) and/or level 2 (geophysical parameters);
Very good skills in a high-level, compiled programming language, such as Fortran, C/C++, Java;
Fluency in command-line use on Linux/Unix platforms;
Skills in writing scientific/technical documents;
Familiarity with Microsoft Office;
Good inter-personal skills in support of team work.
The following experience would be an additional asset:
Experience in understanding and specifying requirements;
Experience with the specification, development and validation of satellite data processing chains;
Experience with calibration and product validation methods;
Knowledge in radiative transfer, in particular, in the microwave frequency range.
The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the consultant must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other.
