    Job Description

    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will lead our world-leading space photonics R&D group that is the tip of the spear in developing ground-breaking systems for communication and sensing to be deployed in next-generation laser-equipmed satellite constellations and UAV swarms. Heading the Space and Sensing R&D programmes, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of our business by working with pioneering companies in Europe, Japan and USA in order to fuel the company’s growth and turn new ideas into innovative product lines. As a strategic thinker you will create and execute on product roadmaps, setting milestones and creating new joint R&D opportunities with current and new customers. You will work closely with other parts of the business, including business development, sales and engineering in order to align R&D activities, secure contracts and drive new products into manufacturing. You will work within a multidisciplinary team including electronic, optical and mechanical engineers to develop cutting-edge new products that will deliver profitable revenue growth.



    Create, manage and implement strategic New Product Development (NPD) roadmaps within the Business Units deployed, in collaboration with other functions of the business.

    Lead multi-disciplinary teams focusing on research, development and commercialization of new fiber-optic, opto-mechanical and opto-electronic products

    Create and maintain a balanced portfolio of new NPD projects based on return on investment, time to market and ratio of internal/external funding.

    Expand team skill-set and create new technical capabilities within the business

    Own and control team budget, manage delivery of technical milestones and control yearly team budget

    Prepare R&D proposals to customers and public organizations for securing external funding and de-risking business plans in longer-term NPD projects

    Work with Business Development and Engineering teams to support tender activities and generate solutions for customers

    Drive products from design, to prototyping up to environmental qualification following internal or customer-driven NPI


    Knowledge Skills and Experience


    At least Master’s degree level in engineering with specialization in photonics. PhD preferred.

    At least 10 years of industrial experience in fiber optics or optoelectronics

    Minimum of 3 years of experience in managing direct reports and leading cross-functional teams

    Track record in driving R&D projects to production

    Ability to work across multiple business units with strong communication skills and problem-solving initiatives

    Extended knowledge in product engineering, NPI and excellent capability to master new technologies

    Adaptable in often rapid changing design requirements and customer needs

    Must be eligible to work in the UK.


    Technical and commercial experience and strategic thinking

    Previous industrial experience as lead engineer in fiber-optic systems

    Experience in design, simulation and development of fiber-optic systems

    Understanding of Telcordia, MIL and/or ECSS/ECSS qualification standards

    Background knowledge on manufacturing techniques and their capabilities
