Who You Are

We are looking to strengthen our team with an ISS Crew Support Engineer. The primary goal of the Crew Support Team is to facilitate the daily life of the astronauts. In other words, its purpose is to support the assigned astronauts and their families and to minimize the stress and inconveniences encountered during all mission phases from training to post-flight activities.

This position is full-time and is based at the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. The expected starting date will be 01 July 2024 but there is some flexibility on this and we will be happy to discuss this with you in person.

What You Will Focus on

Support ESA Astronauts before, during and after their Mission as part of the ESA Crew Support Team;
Gather and coordinate all necessary information for the organization of the launch campaign, with a focus on the immediate family of the astronaut;
Coordinate the procurement and delivery of bonus food items chosen by the astronaut to their destination (typically Houston, USA);
Facilitate the gathering of personal items and preference data of the astronaut as well as their upload process to the International Space Station (ISS) on the astronaut's private allocation;
Accompany and support all guests of the astronauts during the launch campaign (immediate family included);
Coordinate and organize private communications between the astronaut and their family during the mission;
Coordinate and support tasks linked with the astronaut and the on-site organization at the landing site;
Maintain an overview of the travel budget allocated to the astronaut and their families;
Support and coordinate activities of the members of the European Astronaut Reserve;
Contribute to the development and coordination of Artemis & Gateway Crew Support documentation and activities;
Support quality management processes and ensure documentation of lessons learned as well as operational knowledge.

The selected candidate will also participate in the ISS operations in close coordination with the rest of the Columbus Flight Control Team as EUROCOM (European Communicator and Medical Ops).

The EUROCOM team represents the interest of the astronauts on board in front of the flight control team. It is responsible for all crew communications – both verbal and in written form – pertaining to the execution of ESA activities on-board the ISS, as well as for the health and well-being of ESA crew members.

The related duties cover

Represent the crew in the Columbus Flight Control Team (Col FCT);
Voice communication with the crew on-board the International Space Station;
Act as specialist for crew medical support topics;
Provide Col FCT with background information on ISS medical activities;
Support day, night, weekend and holiday shifts for mission related activities.

What You Bring

Master’s or Engineering degree in a technical subject (although other fields considered) and/or a minimum 2 years’ experience as Operations Engineer/Flight Controller;
Experience of working in multinational, multicultural and/or intergovernmental organizations.

Essentially

Good teamwork, communication and strong interpersonal skills;
Native or C1 level English, high standard of oral and written communication skills;
Ability to work in close collaboration with international colleagues;
Due discretion, and sensitivity in dealing with confidential information;
Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment;
Excellent organizational skills, with focus on schedule, meeting deadlines;
Readiness to take on responsibility, work under pressure.

Desirable

Experience and/or knowledge of ISS operations;
Quick to pick up and understand technical subjects and concepts;
German and/or French language skills is an asset.

Furthermore

After the familiarization period it is expected that the candidate participates periodically in rotating on-call/shift duty;
Willingness to travel and work at inconvenient times in support of mission operations.
