The Role:

The Flight Segment Manager is a pillar of ClearSpace's programs organization. In this position you will be accountable and responsible for the on-time delivery of the spacecraft to the required performance and standards within the allocated budget, as well as leading the team of the spacecraft program subsystem engineers. To ensure the technical success of ClearSpace's missions, this requires a high level of competence in all aspects of spacecraft engineering, design and operations. Our ideal candidate will have significant experience in a senior position within the space industry.

Key activities will be:

  • Leading Spacecraft architecture development, system/subsystem requirements development, systems analysis, trade studies, systems modelling and simulation;
  • Leading definition throughout the Spacecraft development life cycle, including design, requirements development, analysis and decomposition, integration and test;
  • Technical leadership, coordination and alignment to program objectives; PoC with program internal and external stakeholders on technical and programmatic matters.

Technical management including:

  • Planning of the technical activities per phase, review of the workforce needed and timeline, updates;
  • Requirements and interfaces management;
  • Risk, opportunity, mitigation and resolution plans;
  • Critical paths and priorities;
  • Development plans;
  • LLI and procurement plans;
  • Consolidate the system engineering processes, standards, per development phase of the program;
  • Support, update, and configuration-control of program-wide engineering design definition deliverable document(s);
  • Leading technical assessments, trade-offs, baseline definition and maintenance, budgets;
  • Supporting product realisation: implementation, integration, verification and validation;
  • Supporting Product Assurance activities with engineering studies;
  • Supporting engineering hiring plan and interviews;
  • Supporting proposal writing for future business.

Required Experience:

  • 8+ years experience in the spacecraft industry with 3+ years in technical leadership positions;
  • Experience in decomposition of system requirements, trade studies and sizing/error budget development for a Spacecraft system;
  • Familiarity with the full space program lifecycle, from business development, proposal generation and contract negotiations, all the way through design, development, assembly, test and successful delivery;
  • Confidence with leading multidisciplinary project teams;
  • Highly organized, capable of tracking multiple streams of critical activities at once;
  • Experience working in a technical capacity with LEO, MEO or GEO Spacecraft system definition and design;
  • Comfortable interacting with customers, both institutional (UKSA, ESA) and commercial.

Desired Experience:

An in-depth knowledge or a level of expertise including practical experiences in three or more of the following areas is required:

  • Spacecraft System level design/analyses;
  • Avionics/electronics;
  • Electrical and Power;
  • Attitude and Orbit Control;
  • Propulsion;
  • Thermal & Mechanical;
  • TCR engineering;
  • Spacecraft AIT;
  • Spacecraft LEOP + In-orbit operations;
  • Manufacturing processes;
  • Launcher Interfaces;
  • Team Leadership.

Desired Education: 

  • MSc Degree in Aerospace, Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or similar.

  • A team player, willing to get stuck in and collaborate wherever is needed;
  • Agile, flexible and able to work across a geographically-distributed teams;
  • A great communicator.
